Douglas's Story

Life After my WHS graduation, I attended the Virginia Military Institute and graduated in 1979--entering the Marine Corps as a 2d Lieutenant. After completing the Basic School to learn HOW to be an officer, I attended Naval Flight Training and received my wings in July 1981. Newly married to a WHS graduate (Class of 77), my bride and I moved to Jacksonville, North Carolina where I was assigned to Marine Aircraft Group 26. I flew CH-53D helicopters and deployed aboard USS Guam in 1983/1984. On that cruise, I participated in combat operations in Grenada (Operation URGENT FURY) and with the Multi-National Peacekeeping Force in Beirut, Lebanon. I deployed again in 1985 aboard USS Saipan, then served an infantry tour with the 6th Marines as a Forward Air Controller. After that tour, we moved to Quantico, VA, where I attended the Marine Corps Amphibious Warfare School. We returned to MAG-26 in 1988, serving in Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 362--the "Ugly Angels." During that tour, I deployed for Desert ...Expand for more
Shield/Desert Storm, returning for a short time and redeploying aboard USS Saipan. We left North Carolina in 1992, returning to Quantico, Virginia where I served in various analysis positions, attended the Marine Corps Command & Staff College, and finished my career and retired in 1999. From 1996 until 2016, I supported Boy Scouts of America and served as a Scoutmaster for Troop 1390, based in Dale City, VA from 2001 to 2016. This was my greatest joy--to shape boys to becoming good men one day. One of my greatest joys is to receive a visit from one of them. Since my Marine Corps retirement, I have worked numerous efforts as a support contractor, in support of the Marine Corps and fully retired in July 2022. I am a plank owner at the National Museum of the Marine Corps, where I continue to serve as a docent. I welcome you to stop by sometime to the Northern Virginia area. My wife and I have been married since 1981, and we have two grown children, both married and have blessed us with three grandchildren.
