Douglas's Story
Life
After high school I attended UNC-Wilmington. I had fun there, probably too much; I wasn't invited to come back. I went back to work for Crown Drugs in management. I met my first wife Lisa in 1989 and we were married in June of 1990. We were both to immature to be married and divorced in early 1993. Then in March of 1993 I enlisted in the Air Force, went to Texas for basic training and technical school. My first assignment was at Dover AFB, Delaware. There I married Debbie Moser (you may remember her from high school) and had a daughter Stephanie in August of 1994. The marriage didn't work out and I got divorced in 1995. I then met my present wife Sharon and remarried the same year. She had two boys (Anthony & Chris) from her previous marriage. They say third times the champ and it must be because we have been doing great. Then in November 1996 we had a son9Ashton.) In March 1997 the Air Force moved us to Elmendorf AFB, in Anchorage, Alaska. We loved it there; so much we bought some land with the hopes of building a summer home. The summers are great there and the winters are not as bad as everyone thinks. In March 2001 I was diagnosed with Acute Disseminated Encephalomyelitis (ADEM) which is a neurological disease similar to multiply scoliosis. After 3 weeks in the hospital and 3 month of outpatient physical, occupational,...Expand for more
and speech therapy I was 95% healed. Then in October the Air Force moved us to Kirtland AFB, New Mexico. We bought a house in Rio Rancho, which is a small town just north of Albuquerque. In November I started having seizures which isn't conducive to military service, so in August 2002, the Air Force put me on temporary medically retirement listing (TDRL) while they monitored my condition to see if I would get better. I did improve but not enough and after almost 10 years of service to my country, I was given a medical discharge with severance pay. I am now rated 100% disable. I can't work due to my disability. We in moved back to Winston-Salem in June of 2004 and bought a house on Foxdale Dr. which is off of S. Peace Haven Rd. My wife works as a nurse for Carolina Urological Associates. In Jan 2006 I was diagnosed with Multiply Scoliosis. I was told in 2001 that ADEM patients have a 50/50 chance of getting MS at some point and they don't know why. My oldest step-son (Anthony) moved to Dover, DE to live with his father in August of 2005. It wasn't a good move for him so in March of 2007 he and his wife and their son (that makes me a grandfather) moved back to Winston. They lived with us for a year and have just bought their first home. I'm really proud of them.
Anyway, that¿s my story. I¿d like to hear from some of you all.
