Doug's Story
Life
After I graduated from Malcolm Campbell, I attended Grade 12 at High School of Montreal and then Queen's in Applied Science (Engineering). I graduated in 1972 with a B.Sc. (Hons.) in Mining Engineering and went to work for a year at Iron Ore Co. of Canada in Schefferville, PQ (on the north side of the Quebec/Labrador border). After leaving there in May '73, I backpacked around Europe for 5 months. Between 1974 and 1980, I worked for major Canadian mining and mining consulting companies, taking time out between August 1976 and May 1977 to backpack in Hawaii, Fiji, Australia, New Zealand, and Tahiti, and to hitchhike from BC back to Ontario. While in New Zealand, I spent three months as the Warden of the Youth Hostel in Wellington. In May 1980, I moved to Illinois to work as a mining and tunneling consultant. In 1988, I returned to grad school at the University of Waterloo, and graduated with a Ph.D. in Earth Sciences in 1991. From 1991 to 2007, I worked primarily on identifying and remediating soil and groundwater contamination in Illinois, Wisconsin and other Midwest States.
From March 2007 through December 2020, I worked for Agapito Associates, Inc., a mining and geological engineering consulting firm. In this position, I returned to my mining roots. My job-related international travel includes trips to Brazil, Russia, Germany, South Korea, Congo (Brazzaville), the Afar Triangle in northern Ethiopia, and China. My wife's name is Paulette and, since September 1, 2009, we have lived in Lakewood, Colorado about 5 minutes from the mountains. Paulette is active with horseback groups in Jefferson County and an emergency equine rescue group in case of wildfires . I am a member of the online Keystone International Rotary E-Club out of western Pennsylvania. We have two dogs -- a small breed mix (Brandy) and an Australian cattle dog (Bonnie). The dogs are both rescues. We have also acted as foster parents for rescued dogs, using our dogs to socialize the rescued animals (one at a time) who are usually very timid.
Paulette and I spent our honeymoon in Normandy, France in May 2004 just two weeks before the 60th Anniversary of D-Day. In May 2005, we celebrated our first anniversary by hiking down into the Grand Canyon (with 50 lb backpacks) and spending a night in a tent down in the Canyon before hiking back up and out. In February 2007, we visited Uganda (East Africa) for the Rotary Club of Wheaton (Illinois). In August 2008, Paulette accompanied me to Brazil for a week to visit a potash project on the Amazon .
In July 2008, I achieved another of my dreams by canoeing, camping and portaging in the Boundary Waters in Minnesota for a week. In October 2011 after a mining conference in the UK, my wife and I met distant Hambley cousins who live near Whitby, Yorkshire. (We had previously met another distant Hambley cousin in the UK on our honeymoon in 2004.) We also visited other ancestral areas in Lincolnshire on this trip and in Cornwall, UK in 2014. In 2013, we vacationed at a resort in the rainforest in Belize during which trip we visited Mayan temple ruins at Tikal, Guatemala and Caracol, Belize.
