Douglas's Story

Life What a trip! 20 years later and still chipping away at it. Progress in the past few years has been greater than the 15 years prior. I have been married for 14 years and finally went back to school to finish my bachelor's degree. I also started my master's degree in counseling. I should be done by the time I am about 124! Looking forward to the next 20 years as I have new drive and ambition...not really for a particualr job or career path, rather just growing as an individual. I see things more clearly today than ever before. Growing up is great! What freedom!!! My free time is spent with my kids coaching little league or vacationing when we get the chance. My son is a golfer and daughter is a gymnast. I am also still active musically with some new goals on the horizon. When it is just dad time I ride my motorcycle. I ride with a few groups but nothing regularly. Mostly by myself or with a group of friends. Ever thougt of becoming a biker? I highly recomend it. What a great way to clear the cobwebs from your mind!! School Don't know about the memories of school. Can't remember the significant funny stuff. Of course, the friends I used to hang with were pretty influencial. Sometimes that was good and others...well...you do the math!! Northwest was a good memory because my grandfather drove a school bus and I rode home with him sometimes. Middle school was good at Crestview because I lived 2 blocks fro the school. High school was a time that as I reflect, I would have taken more risks and worried less about what people thought of me. Then onto college... College I spent a few years kicking around Huntington College. Not happy with who I was in those days, but that is part of the growing experience. I don't really like who I was, but that was all part of who I have become. And I like who I am now! I started back to school at IPFW in 2002 and graduated in August of ...Expand for more
2007. I kind of created my own degree, mostly in the humanities (Organizational Leadership, Psychology, Communications and Criminal Justice (only because some of my police academy credits will transfer...quicker way to graduate!!) I started at Huntington University in September of 2007. Being a dad, employee, and a student all at the same time is a little overwhelming at mid-terms and finals weeks! Oh, well! Someday I will look back and say... Workplace After I left college the first time around I kind of did a few odds and ends jobs (mostly retail) and then landed a pretty good gig in 1991 in the full time music business. That was fun, but unless you are a star or producer you don't make much. Then in 1993 I landed my life-long dream job at the Grant County Sheriff's Department. Yep, carried gun and everything!! I enjoyed it for the most part. What a great dream come true. I learned a lot about people in that job. I also learned a lot about myself. I found myself judging people and being judged. That part I didn't like. I left in 1999 after 6 1/2 years and went into business with my father. We were directly related to the airline industry so when September 11, 2001 came around our business started to diminish. In December of 2002 we shut that business down. I had seen the writing on the wall with the airline industry and so I started back to school in the fall of 2002. In the summer of 2003 I needed a job that was user friendly with my college classes as I am attending traditional campus with traditional hours. SO I thought it would be a good idea to drive a bus for Fort Wayne Community Schools. There I go...thinking again! It paid well, but I left in the fall of 2006 to become an academic advisor at IPFW. Much more suited to this than driving a bus for the Fort wayne community School corporation. I still maintain my commercial Driver's License and drive a charter bus for fun.
