Douglas's Story
Life
I was born in 1948 in Toronto. I attended Hodgson Public School, Northern Secondary and York University.
My work career has been varied. I have worked in construction as a sheet metal worker, helped mechanics in the Toronto Police Garage, worked as a library clerk and a truck driver.
After my wife's death in 1982, I went back to school and pursued full time study at York University. I received my Hons. BA in 1988 but was unsuccessful in my attempt to enter a B.Ed. course, putting an end to my hopes of becoming a teacher. I worked as a truck driver for 18 years until my retirement in May, 2015.
I live alone in my own house. My great interest and passion is aviation. I came to this interest through my late father who was an officer in the RCAF during WWII. I have been a longtime member of the CAHS (Canadian Aviation Historical Society). I am a licenced glider pilot and owned a vintage two seat glider, a trainer used by the United States Army Air Force in WWII!
I am also a Russophile. I travelled by myself to Russia in 1972 visiting Leningrad, Moscow , Novgorod and Zagorsk. I took Russian language at York University and try to keep some fluency in the language.

orty years of holding a glider pilot licence, I have made the decision to stop flying. There are several factors. Since my move to Brighton, the distance to the glider field has more than doubled. In addition, check flights were not going as well as I had hoped. My responses are slower than I would wish and I think that this is one good thing in my life that must come to an end. I will try to find a new sport for my retirement.
Sadly, I will not be able to fly the glider that I was restoring. After a search through aviation museums in Europe, the Gliding Heritage Centre in Hertfordshire, England, accepted my glider as a donation. I had to pack the glider in a shipping container but they paid all of the transportation costs. It arrived at the museum in mid April, 2018. The museum will attempt to make the aircraft airworthy next year. Perhaps in a few years, I can journey to England and see my old ship. I have added photos of my days flying in the Central ontario Soaring Association near Peterborough back in the '70s and '80s to my photo album for those who wish to see them.
This biography comprises the main body of my accomplishments and activities. I welcome any inquiries from former classmates who may wish to write to me.
