Douglas's Story

College I don't have too much to relate about my college experience. Attended George Washington University in Washington, D.C. at night. Took primarily english & sociology courses, but had a little history also. Had some real good profesors that were interesting in themselves. Most of the class were active duty military. Did most of my research at the Library of Congress which was great. Workplace Worked as a kid selling & delivering the Ketchikan Daily News; fished on the "Elenor" trolling for salmon; glazed halibut at E.C. Phillips; ran a bread wrapping machine in bakery; washed dishes at the Pioneer Cafe; cooked crap at the Crab Cannery; was a bag boy at Log Cabin & White Cliff Grocery stores and worked at the Ketchikan Pulp Mill between my junior & senior years. After graduation worked for about nine months at the mill prior to departing, with Rolf Hildre for a trip around the lower 48. Joined the Marine Corps in Washington, DC in 1957. Will relate years 1957 - 1977 in my military bio. After retiring returned to Ketchikan and the Ketchikan Pulp Mill. Worked at the mill for two years. r the Alaska Dept of Corrections in Ketchikan. Bought back 5 years of military time and retired as a Sergeant in 1994. Worked as a Shift Supervisor; Compliance Officer; Security/Safety Officer and filled in as both Superintendent and Assistant Superintendent. Good career. Military Served in the United States Marine Corps from May 1957 thru July 1977. Retired as a Master Sergeant (E-8). Had duty assignments both in the U.S. and overseas. Went through Boot Camp at Parris Island, SC Senior DI was SSgt "Crow" Crawford, who later was Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps. Was a rifleman/fire team leader in 1st Bn, 8th Marines. Was on a 9 month Med Cruise and landed in Lebanon. Spent over eight years on independent duty in Santa Monica & in San Francisco. While at 12th Marine Corps District, San Francisco worked in the Adjutant's Office primarily Casualty Notification for the Western States. Was NCOinC of the Combat Arms Assignment Section at HQMC. Served two partial tours in Vietnam. Also had a tour at Marine Barracks, Kodiak where I reenlisted for the first time. Retired in 1977 while on my second tour at 12th MCD, San Francisco.
