Douglass's Story

Life I am the sole-proprietor of TradeWinds International, a small manufacturer of "High-Performance Coatings". I am listed as Director of Technical Support, a fancy name for spear-catcher. I single-handedly raised my three children from elementary school though college. This left very little time for photography (my original vocation). The unrequited love of my life is Carol (a single mother of three). Because of her, I am an accomplished 2-stepper. I am an eBay Junkie, which feeds my habit as an avid collector of scrimshaw & whale teeth, as well as books on Scottish history & steam trains. I am webmaster of ScrimshawCollectors.com. I love my 5-speed, 4-wheel drive, 5.2-liter, extended cab Dodge Ram. I live in Long Beach, just south of L.A. SoCal is best in the Winter & Spring; Otherwise, I would rather be 4-wheelin' at 10,000+ feet in Colorado! School I attended three elementary schools, two junior highs, and three high schools! After so many years, these schools tend to run together. But my best memories are of Eighth Grade at Brethren School in Whittier CA, where I was very well acquainted with Mr. Shedd (Principal) and his "Board-of-Education", complete with resistance-lessening holes! I will always remember "Miss O" for kind encouragement of my love of science. Otherwise I may well have been "on the run" for most of my adult life. My Senior year at Gunn HS was also memorable, but mostly because of Sandra Silva, an exchange student from Brazil (She has her own ClassMates.com profile). She could overlook my adolescent flaws, and even taught me a word or two of Portugese. College My college education started with a few years at Foothill Community College right out of H.S. I then spent 4-years in the U.S. Navy, then 1-year traveling through-out Europe, with most time spent photographing Scotland and teaching photography in Germany. After 18-months earning tuition money (and getting married), I entered Brooks Institute of Photography, where I self-tailored my education (much to the dis-approval of my instructors) to the emerging field of ocular diagnostic imaging. I worked with the local hospital, learning the basics of fluorescein angiography (F/A) and slit-lamp photomacrography, both used to diagnose eye diseases and injuries. One approving professor arranged a 6-month post-graduate externship at LAC/USC Hospital, focusing on basic medical imaging and introductory micrography. Eventually, a world-recognized Fellow of the Ophthalmic Photography Society, tutored me ono-on-one, in clinical diagnostic F/A. Thank you Bill Ludwick! Workplace I now own & operate TradeWinds International, a small manufacture/distributing business specializing in "High Performance Coatings" and a few specific cleaners (graffiti & paverstone driveways). I niche market to diverse clients such as CA D.O.T. (Caltrans), the L.A.U.S.D., County of L.A.; City of L.A., Denny's Restaurants, Disneyland, lumber-treating plants, Ready-Mix truck owners, gymnasium gameline painters, etc. For decades, my chemist has provided MilSpec coatings to NASA, the USAF, the USN, and their vendors, such as Sperry-Rand, McDonnell/Douglas, and Boing. In the early 90's, I formed TWI to market these same high-adhesion, chemical-resistant, or stain (i.e. graffiti)-resistant coatings to the commercial and industrial markets. My website lists all of the certifications and specifications earned by my coatings, as well as scores of photos. I hope to remain an active, independent, small businessman for many years to come. My first job after the LAC-USC externship was as a diagnostic ophthalmic technician at Santa Monica Hospital. After 2-years, I was recruited by Kowa Optimed, a Japanese f...Expand for more
undus camera manufacturer, located in Torrance CA. I basically traveled the USA coast-to-coast, training private physician's in-office staff to perform diagnostic fluorescein angiography (f/a) in his own office, with his new fundus camera. I even traveled to Japan to consult on fundus camera design for the U.S. market. After a few years, I started my own mobile in-office f/a service, operating in the greater L.A. area. Eventually HMO's took away all of my clients, and I went to work for an 11-physician clinic in Colton CA. There, I supervised four diagnostic technicians for the very busy Inland Eye Institute, and orchestrated all surgical training videos, slide presentations, specialty photography, etc. I lost that position upon IEI merging with another large eye group (I was the higher paid of the two supervisors!). I then briefly worked for a Retina Specialist in Glendale CA, but he released me upon joining an HMO with their own angiographer. That second job-burn prompted me to get out of medicine entirely. Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me! As a retinal angiographer, I set 10,000 Intra-Veneous (IV) fluorescein dye injections, with only a few minor, adverse reactions. I was a Certified Retinal Angiographer (CRA); a Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA); and an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT-1A). Military I was suppose to attend Corpman school out of Boot Camp (1970), but was told that I would probably be trained as a Dental Tech (same designation), so I opted for Radioman School instead. My first duty station was Naval Communication Station (NavCommSta) Keflavik,Iceland. I had to find it on a library globe! This "hardship duty station" was for one year, but after realizing what an incredable place Iceland can be, I signed on for another 6-months. One buddy had an old, bright yellow VW bug, dubbed "Tweety Bird", and nearly every weekend, a few of us drove 20-miles (on the only paved road!) to the capital city of Rekjavik. I often took exploratory drives in a WWII-vintage, bright red Jeep, capable of crossing lava beds and sheep pastures. I also took Islandic-organized, week-long, Mercedes bus group-outings into the island interior, and along the un-inhabited, far coastline. Dozens of Islanders (and a few Americans) forded rivers, climbed volcanoes & waterfalls, expored lava moonscapes, cooked in natural hot-water pools, trekked glaciers, tent-camped in the open, or slept side-by-side in community centers in small, scattered villages. I gave my Nikon and lenses quite a work-out, shooting historic dwellings, lava tubes, the Althing, Puffin cliffs, geysers, and a thousand square miles of lichen-covered lava fields & cliffs. I took one 30-day leave, meeting stateside friends in Paris, then exloring France and Belgium countryside by car. I always wanted to return to Iceland, but never have. I was then assigned to the aircraft carrier USS America, CVA-66, stationed in Norfolk VA, but deployed out of Subic Bay, Philippines. I was copter-transferred from a supply ship to the carrier while both were underway on Yankee Station! Sometimes we were on-line for 30-days, and carrier life can be very routine. A few of us organized and ref'd volleyball & basketball matches in the hanger deck, and I conducted photo seminars in the mess hall. I even lost a frisbee or two out an elevator door. In 6-months, I only got to visit Hong Kong and dive Subic Bay a few times. America returned to VA for 6-months, then a cruise to the Med, where I photographed Athens and the Parthenon over the next 6-months before a European discharge in Majorca Spain. I purchased a Honomag van (Mercedes) and traveled through-out Europe for the next year.
