Workplace
After leaving the marine corps in 1974, I stayed in California. There was just no work to be had back in Oregon. I worked in Orange County for a year as a factory mechanic and at night as a bartender (Very fun). In 1975 I moved to the SF Bay area and went to work for Reynolds Aluminum, where I stayed for five years, until I joined law enforcement. I worked for the Pleasanton Police Department for 25 years and had a great career. I had the good fortune to be a detective, motorcycle officer, and later a supervisor and manager. I was a SWAT team member and supervisor, Investigation Division Supervisor, and Traffic Bureau Supervisor. A unique opportunity came up in 2003 to retire from the PD and join the US Department of Homeland Security. I am currently assigned as a aviation security inspector at San Francisco International Airport. We essentially are trying to keep the airport and airlines in compliance with federal regulations regarding security. In short that means, keeping from being attacked. I intend to do this for a couple more years and then play ...Expand for more
golf and raise horses for a living.
Update: As of August 1, 2009, I have transferred to Las Vegas. Same job, new location. I finally pulled the plug and retired for good. These days are spent playing golf and spending Summer's on the ranch in Colorado.
Military
I joined the USMC in 1970, just after finishing up at Clatsop College. I was trained as a jet mechanic on KC-130f aerial refuelers. In 1972 I received orders to go to Okinawa. I barely got there before I was sent on detachment to the jungle in Thailand. I was part of what was known as Task Force Delta. We were in the jungle somewhere near the Mekong River. I was assigned as the supervisor of the flight line (as it was). I lived in an open tent, eating C Rations and going on aerial missions against the north for 3 months. I eventually made it back to Okinawa, but went back to the jungle for two weeks at a time to fly missions. I also got to see the attractions in Da Nang, Bien Hoa, Nakom Phenom and a lot of other places. I eventually made it back to the US and finished my military service at MCAS El Toro, in southern california. I was discharged in 1974 at the rank of sergeant.
