James's Story

Born December 6th 1953 on Lover's Lane in Wytheville Virginia to James D. Bass Sr. and Francis Bass (Hudson). While my full name is James D. Bass Jr. I normally go by Duane but in some yearbooks you will find me listed as Jim or James and in another Duane. While living in the north end of Columbus Ohio I attended Hamilton Avenue Elementary 1st through 3rd grade and then we moved to the east end of Columbus. There I attended 4th and 5th grade at Leawood Elementary on Hamilton Road. Then I attended Sherwood Junior High School now called Sherwood Middle School from 1967 through 1969. Yep, it was me who busted the glass window in the music room I think in 1969. I paid for that dearly. Also, this is where I met my first girlfriend, Diane Christian. I still think of her often. Then I went to Walnut Ridge High School from 1970 to May of 1971. I would have graduated in 1972. My best friends at this time were Jeff Christian, Ronald George, and Uncle John. Later in life I learned that Jeff Christian was killed by the police in a drug raid on his residence. I miss him often. I quit high school and joined the US Army (one of those dumb moves that has saved my butt over and over again due to the free health care I get.). I was stationed with the 1st Armored Division in Illeshiem, West Germany from 1971 to 1973 and served with the 4th Battalion 35th Armored Brigade Bravo Company as a M60 Patton Tank driver and loader. Later, I was moved to Headquarters Company and served in a Redeye unit. When I returned from Germany I went to work for my father who was in the car business. We opened a number of car lots on the south and west end of Columbus under the business name A&A Auto Sales. It was an interesting time selling used cars and when needed repossessing them. I did enjoy the cat and mouse game of tracking down cars of people who did not pay. Around 1985 I decided to go back to school and went to Devry Institute of Technology on Alum Creek Drive in Columbus, Ohio and graduated in 1989 with a Bachelor of Science in Information Technology. I was working 60+ hours a week and going to school full time and I do not know how I did it. I moved to Newport, Kentucky in 1989 and went to work for Convergys a telephone billing company and subsidiary of Cincinnati Bell. In 2001 I became a friend of Bill W. and he is still my best friend. Laid off in 2004 I decided to open my online business selling historical press photos on ebay and eventually became the largest seller of my type. My ID is nky-photos. Also, this year I took a Paralegal course at Beckfield College in Florence Kentucky and graduated with as a Phi-Beta Kappa with a GPA 4.0. In 2005 my fiance Donna L. Bass, (my former wife), went to sleep and passed away. It broke my heart her sudden passing. She had just graduated herself from Beckfield with a Paralegal degree. Briefly I taught at Beckfield but I guess the students didn't care much for me as a teacher. To bad I kind of liked it. In 2008 I married a wonderful women who treats my like a king, Patricia Bass. In 2010 I went back to my first love which is playing historical wargames, see the photo of me in the 1970 yearbook in the Strategic Tactical Army Wargame Club, and opened a game store in Covington Kentucky. My address is Newport Games and Photos LLC, Covington, Ky. (Updated Feb. 2012) In November of 2011 I began going to OA AKA Overeater's Anonymous after many years of fruitless attempts to lose weight. As of April 2013 I am 65 lbs lighter and 7 of my 9 medications have disappeared. It is truly a miracle. friends have told me I look 20 years younger and I do feel a lot better not hauling all that weight around. On August 25th of 2012 I attended the 40th Reunion of the 1972 class of Walnut Ridge High School at Gatsby's in Gahanna Ohio. I th...Expand for more
ink it was the highlight of my year and I will post photos of it shortly. I loved seeing and remembering all those old friends I knew many years ago before I drifted away from Columbus. April 14th of 2013 I had a heart attack while working at the game store. Don't let anyone tell you God doesn't exist. I immediately knew I had a problem and needed to go to the hospital now. I called the wife and told her I was going to pick her up and we were going to the VA hospital in Cincinnati. Just a short distance from the store I realized that I wasn't going to make it. I said a little prayer and the heart attack stopped immediately. I picked up the wife and we drove to the hospital. When I arrived they questioned me about the attack, thinking "rightly" that it must have been something else. They took me back and laid me down to check me out when the heart attack restarted. I had a stent put in and back to work within a few days. In 2014 I closed my game store in Latonia Kentucky but I still operate my online business nky-photos AKA Northern Kentucky Photos. I am semi retired now and counting down the clock to social security. As of November 2014 I have lost a total of 79 lbs since I started going to OA. My current weight is 170 lbs. I finely learned what was causing my overeating. Carbohydrates. Once I removed them from my diet my desire to eat returned to normal. Today I eat 3 meals a day which consist of Fruit, Vegetables, and Meat and nothing else. Since 1990 I have lived in Newport Ky. On July 15th of 2013 we will be moving to 3124 Rosina Ave, Covington, Ky 41015. We have sold our home in Newport and purchased a new home in Covington area AKA Latonia. I have taken a part time job working in Cincinnati at the Oelo BASF Chemical Plant to supplement my income from eBay in the fall of 2015. I will be taking early retirement in Dec. of 2015 and received my first Social Security check in February 2016. Never thought I would live this long. Now it is time to give back what I have been so freely given and I joined the board of 722 Washington St. an AA club house in March of 2016 to serve he members there. On August 2oth 2016 I was elected treasurer of 722 Washington St. In September of 2016 my wife Pat had a mini-stroke. We were both slow to pick up the changes it made in Pat and after 3 trips to the hospital and nursing home I have turned into her care giver and I am OK with that. I made a decision long ago that I would rather shovel sh-- in heaven for all eternity then be a prince in hell. It is just starting early. Pat lost her desire to eat and nearly starved to death. We managed to get her to quit smoking which has helped. She has started to eat more as expected and she has a chance now. In March we were considering putting her in hospice. After a 13 month battle my wife Pat passed away on Jan. 11th 2018. I am physically and mentally and emotionally exhausted from taking care of her. May she rest in peace. I managed to survive Covid-19 by huddling at home and wearing a mask. I have a weak immune system and I managed to pick up an internal case of Shingles again except this time it would not go away. Life was shear torture for 4-5 months and my second Moderna shot basically kicked my immune system into high gear and cured my internal Shingles. I have started losing weight again and I am down 30 lbs in the last 15 weeks. I never want to let my immune system get so weak from Diabetes again. I still wargame as a hobby, I never lost my love playing with toy soldiers, and help out with the ebay business nky-photos. Last but not least I am an active member of OA to keep my weight in line. Without OA's help and AA's help I probably would not have made it to retirement and I am eternally grateful. Between the four I live a pretty full life.

I have run across this on I think Reuter's and now on Playle's. I suspect a Ad company is trying to download software on my computer. It disguises itself as an update. AVG blocked it on Reuters and I would not allow it to d
Nice slow game of Harpoon. Running a small convoy up the Norwegian coast escorted by two frigates. I lost one frigate but the rest of the convoy made it through.
Well I have done it. Magnesium Citrate the most powerful laxative in the world and I figure I am man enough to take it.

Picked up one of the best videos about Carriers ever produced for a little under $9.04 new which includes shipping. This was probably about $60-$80 new in the 1990s. Carriers never made the cut to DVD and I kind of got tire
