Duncan's Story

I was committed to retirement, then along came an opportunity that was to enticing to pass up. The biggest attractions were that I would be working with a great team, some of whom were my children and we would be embarking on a brand new venture that promises to help some well deserving Canadians. Together we have incorporated the first ever not-for-profit organization designed to help veterans and their families participate in the game of golf. The genesis came from the two founding members of the team Tom Martineau and one of my sons Bruce Phillips. Both veterans and deeply involved with the Occupational Stress Injury Social Support Program (OSISS) within the Department of National Defence. In the spring of 2018 they launched a series of tournaments under the banner of "Bravo Zulu- Heroes Tour" where over 180 veterans enjoyed competitive golf in the Kingston and Ottawa areas. Because of the demand from the participants it was decided in late 2018 to increase the scope and to incorporate under the name "EMERITUS GOLF" (Latin for retired soldier). This led to expanding the top level of the team to include, amongst others, another son Timothy who has an information security company based out of Miami Florida and my daughter, Vallerie who is with 4 CDSG Signal Squadron in Petawawa (both Timothy and Vallerie attended QHS). In 2019 we are hard at work planning for tournaments in Ontario, Quebec, Manitoba, Saskatchewa...Expand for more
n and British Columbia. I hope to contribute to this venture by drawing from my background in not-for-profit management as the Priory Secretary and Chief Executive Officer of St. John Ambulance for over 10 years. During this time I was involved in strategic planning at the national and international levels. The former led to significant changes in our operations in Canada while the latter resulted in the creation of an international secretariat based in London, England. On the volunteer side I served on several boards of directors including : Canada Safety Council, Battle of Normandy Foundation, Canadian Battlefields Foundation, Conference of Defence Associations Institute,. I was also the Chair of the Charity Council of the Canadian Society of Associations Executives. I presented on : "The Role of Charities in the Future" to the United Nations -Habitat-Human Settlement Programme. My military career started when I left high school in 1955 to join the 3rd Regiment Royal Canadian Horse Artillery in Debert Nova Scotia (Major Macmillan our history teacher was an influence). That is where I met my wife, Dianne, who passed away last October. The family grew as we moved around Canada and North West Europe. In 1970 I was commissioned and continued to serve in places such as a UN tour in Cyprus and attendance at the United States Armed Forces Staff College in Norfolk, Virginia, until I took early retirement in 1986.
