Dwight's Story
What a long strange trip it's been...
Hi y'all...
I never do this, but I will actually write something about myself that isn't a resume. It's been years since I've written one of those, and I rarely post something personal on the Internet. It may take a few installments and a few re-writes like I had to do in English class. I always admired those who could think things through and write it the first time in ink without a scratch-out. Remember, that was before word processing. <grin>
Today, it's May 3rd, 2011, I'm in Anchorage the day after they got Bin Laden and my home is in New Zealand. So as a fast catch-up, between graduating early from Spring Branch in '75 and today, I'm approaching 3 million miles traveled and still have a couple of continents that I haven't worked or played on.
My favorite thing to do is to find someplace enjoyable and charter a boat. In that way, I can sail it wherever I can/want to and get to give it back when I'm done for somebody else to maintain. After Rice, I owned and restored the 1st production fiberglass sailboat ever built... a 1951 Longhorn built by Cape Cod Boatbuilders... and raced it with friends from the rest of the old Southwest Conference schools. OK, enough about sailing or this will get boring quickly, if not already. I did race in the 1st US pro-circuit and my company at the time sponsored our winning boat/team. "Ride the Wave" was our tag line at COMDEX that year when we unveiled the 1st portable imaging (paperless)...Expand for more
solutions based on my vision and some unique methods that my business partner and I developed and filed a patent on. A common occurence in my life has been to design innovative solutions that solve both business and/or engineering problems. Defining moments have included being able to predict and match up what I like to do with what I do as part of the solution. For example, in 2000-2001 I was the CIO/CTO for a publicly listed NZ/AUS venture fund and my responsibilities included working with a portfolio of businesses, including an investment in a Web technologies and an interactive America's Cup racing website.
My family, what's left of it, is spread all over the world with a 1st cousin in Ankara and heritage branches surviving in Belgium and Austria (traceable by name back to the 14th century). My parents have not survived. My father is buried at the US Navel Academy and my mother's ashes may yet be swimming the ocean's currents. The last I heard, all my exes are from or live in Texas..lol and the 3 kids are doing well (a California high school sophomore with 1 ex and two older kids who are graduating this year from the other ex > one is graduationg from William and Mary with a degree in neuroscience and her brother is finishing a law degree at the University of Virginia).
So, if anybody actually reads this far, let me know and feel free to drop me a line at dwightd at alumni (d0t) rice (d0t) edu or call me at US 832 followed by 588 then 1755.
Cheers,
Dwight
