Edward's Story
Life
After leaving Jefferson High in 1954, I studied electrical engineering at U.T. Austin, graduating in 1960. I had one rough year, where I almost switched major to Music. Returned to San Antonio, practiced engineering at Kelly Air Force Base and several other government agencies. I had one tour of duty in Germany, then returned to San Antonio, spent 13 years with the Commissary Services (AFCOMS and DeCA) and retired from government in March 2000 with 44 years (counting some summers I worked during high school and college in electronics repair and telecom engineering). I practiced engineering part time with Marmon Mok and Parsons-3D/I Architects & Engineers in San Antonio until 2015, enjoying a semi-retired life with my wife, Joy. I am now fully retired from the practice of engineering. Our children and grandchildren are living in Washington, East Texas, and Chandler, AZ.
Music and drama have always been a major interest, and I still enjoy singing (mostly in the shower, now!) and listening. I have tape recordings of performances dating back to high school days that I still listen to occasionally -- although, unfortunately, none of the Jefferson A Capella Choir recordings survived the years and the travels. ordings are of operas and recitals presented by the Cosmopolitan Opera Group, sponsored by my voice teacher, Mme. Luisa Bononcini, between 1953 and 1965 ("Traviata", "Rigoletto", "Martha", "Pagliacci", "La Boheme"). Other recordings include "Show Boat" directed by Hal and Elaine Curran (1973), and "The Sorceror" and "Patience" by the Bejar Opera Workshop. Back to the Jefferson Choir: I have often marveled that Mrs. Pease's musical proteges performed so spectacularly and had so much fun doing it. Ah, the Good Old Days! "The Mikado", "H.M.S. Pinafore", "Pirates of Penzance", and "Pickles" were among the choir's musical productions during my years in Jefferson.
I have loved Science Fiction since junior high days at Horace Mann. I've read everything I can find by Robert Heinlein and Isaac Asimov. I was privileged to meet Dr. Asimov while attending the University of Texas, when he visited our science fiction club. He was on the faculty at UT at that time.
Another current interest is genealogy (I started getting interested in it around age 40). Since I also enjoy writing (poetry and fiction, I am writing a family history based on my genealogy research.
