Eddie's Story
School
King Grammar School Chicago 1st grade about 1954
All I remember is a school bully (Kim something) that took my lunch money. Also I lived above a candy store on Van Buren (over looking the construction of the Dan Ryan Expressway)
Chase Grammar School Chicago
I barely remember the name!
Columbus Grammar School
All I remember is that we got out for Columbus Day.
Kilmer Grammar School
We had to recite "Trees" by Joyce Kilmer every morning.
Swift Grammar School (We lived across the street in an old mansion (Sunny Side Mansion). My family operated it as a boarding house. It was a great place for a kid with secret passages and about 8 fireplaces--I had weenie roasts in my bedroom with my own fireplace. Swift was a great school, I believe it was the only grammar school in Chicago with an indoor swimming pool--there's where I learned to swim. I worked part time at Abe's Delicatessen delivering groceries.
Friendship Grammar School 8th Grade, Friendship TN
My sister and I were sent to live with GParents while they got divorced. MY GParents and Uncle were sharecroppers and lived at the edge of a cotton field. We burned wood in a pot-belly stove for heat, a well for water, and an outhouse for out bathroom. I got to had lunch with the principle for a month because I had a tendency to not come back to school after lunch :-)
Reinberg Grammar School Chicago 8th grade
I had a crush on Albina DeBenadeto (Sp?). I lived above the Luna-Bell Bakery on Belmont. I also worked part time in the bakery making French horns, buns, and bread.
St Suzanna Grammar School, Harvey IL 8th Grade 1962
My mother remarried and we moved to the Chicago suburbs. My new step-dad (Victor Kulpa) was Catholic so I ended up being the only protestant in the class. I remember Sister Benilda being the nun that would play ball with use and run bases. I also remember Sister Veronica (my teacher) as being the stereotypical nun with a ruler and room full of knuckles. Some names I have fond remembrances of are Bobbie Swyndroski, Helene Swyndroski, Herb Malec, Don Rosaloski, Diana DelNagro, Marcia Bailey, Ed Preston, and lots of others that escape me right now.
Thornton Township High School Harvey IL Freshman and sophomore 1963-64
(TTHS aka Ten Tons of Horse Stuff or something like that)
I only attended two school years before I quit and joined the Navy.
Of all of lifeÂs regrets, dropping out of HS was my biggest. Strictly for the loss of the social aspects--mainly the dating;-). Loosing out on the academic part wasn't too bad (I have an AS, BS, MBA, Master of Accountancy, and Doctorate in Information Systems). What I really missed was all the social life and growing to adulthood with the great friends I had back then. Some names I will keep in my memory forever are Janet Gee, Herb Malec, Helene Swyndroski, Bobbie Swyndroski, Vickie Panazzo, Cyrus Joyner, Don Rosaloski, Wally Shibish (Sp?), Marcia Bailey, Diana DelNagro, and many others that live in my heart but whose names escape me at the moment.
My best day at TTHS: Class field trip to the Stock Exchange and Commodities Markets downtown Chicago. We had fun crowding in elevators and riding up and down in the Prudential building, running in the streets, and just being kids. I remember that we were supposed to all go back to the school, but Vir...Expand for more
ginia Seidel (Later nominated for a Tony award) got special permission to get off to go to her dance lessons. I also remember being one of the last to get on the bus to go back to TTHS and Janet Gee yelled out that she had saved a small spot next to her at the back of the bus and I said "that's OK, I'll stand"--What an idiot!!!!!!!!!!! I had such a crush on her, and all I could say was "I'll stand" That moment has haunted me.

Best duty station. I can still hear Chief Sharpton saying "You can't turn your troubles away"; Robert "Pete" Pearson giving sage advice; Norm and his dog slick. Mostly I remember Ralph Stingly and Mike Thayer and of course the one-eared ___ ____. I ran into Ralph a few years ago on a visit to Oak Harbor and it was as though no time had past--even though it had been about 30 years.
USS Bon Homme Richard CVA-31
Was on board for one WestPac cruise to Vietnam-Tonkin Gulf before getting orders to Nuc School. Home ported at Subic Bay Philippines. Also visited Sasabo Japan, Yokosuka Japan, and Singapore. Most of the time we were in the Tonkin Gulf. Oly, Smiley, Zip, Cyprian V Galasso, Lofflan, Badell, and others are in my photo album and memory. Unfortunately, I remember nicknames but not necessarily real names. Re-enlisted in combat zone for a tax-free bonus--$1,800 of which I used to pay cash for a new Triumph Spitfire when I returned home late 1968.
Nuclear Power School, Mare Island CA
Nuclear Power Training Unit, SWI Reactor Site Idaho
Very intense school. As a 1st Class, I was leading petty office for my class. Shared a great party house in Pocotello ID (actually on Parish St. in Chubuck)with Starr, Greg "Robbie" Roberts, and others I can't remember now. We had lots of crazy times. Loved my Triumph Spitfire.
Submarine School, New London, CT
Rented a house on Groton Long Point with several classmates. Great location, good parties. Spent a lot of time at the Grotto Disco. So much time, that the place would full and a line to get in, but the owners (Spike? and his brother) would save my group a table, just in case we came by (we always came by)!
USS Dace SSN 607, New London, CT
Came onboard as leading petty officer of Reactor Control Div. Only port visited was Cape Canaveral, FL. The main name I remember was John Gaffney.
USS Wiltsie DD 716, San Diego, CA
Gave up shore duty for another turn at sea. I joined the Navy thinking about riding 'tin cans' (destroyers), so I called the Washington assignment desk and got my orders changed. So I finally got my destroyer assignment. Unfortunately, it was headed for an extended yard period and overhaul. So I decided to not reenlist and got out of the Navy Jan 1972.
