Eddie's Story
Life
Life has been good. In 1975 Jerry Olson (Medford High) and Eddie Appelgate (Crater) got married!Things got better in 1998 when we were baptized together. 2000 was a great year! We rededicated our marriage by renewing our wedding vows on March 28th, our 25th wedding anniversary. In March, 2003, Jerry had quadruple by-pass surgery and is doing wonderfully. There is a greater purpose for him because he should have died with the many blockages and aneurysms he had; he had no warning signs and no heart attack. Jerry retired in 2005 and learned the next day he has diabetes type 2. Pills and diet are contolling it well currently and he is doing very well. We are blessed with some wonderful kids, grandkids, and Christian friends. And we miss all our classmates! THIS JUST IN!!! We took a four week vacation November 15 until December 14, 2007. What a wonderful cruise we had for two weeks of our vacation down the Mexican coast, through the Panama Canal, and into port at Ft. Lauderdale. We started in San Diego where we visited with family before the cruise left, and we ended with a week's stay at our daughter and her family's home in Florida. Cruising is definitely something we want to do again!
Workplace
The longest job I had after High School was with US Bank (short times were spent at First National Bank, Medford; Jackson County S&L, Medford; and Citizens S&L, Medford). I really loved it for a lot of years, then the customer service aspect started changing and everyone's attitude changed, the stress became more than I wanted to live with constantly, so to preserve my health and sanity, I quit. Never being one to be idle, I went to work part-time for the City of Albany in their pre-school program. That was so rewarding and enjoyable that I have stayed in that type of w...Expand for more
ork until I decided to retire in 2007. I loved working with 3 to 5 year olds, they're all so different from each other, and they all have their challenges! All you parents know what I mean! As of the 2002-2003 school year, I have been working for the Greater Albany Public School District as a substitute-on-call SEA. I think I'll call it quits with them now, too, and fully retire since hubby's been retired for two years now.
2025
Fast forward a few years and here we are celebrating 50 years of marriage. We're still living in the Albany area, and we're enjoying our "old age years!" Jerry is still a deacon at our little church in Tangent and I publish the Sunday bulletin weekly, plus I am the church treasurer. In 2010 I gave up doing Kids Club and heading the summer VBS (Vacation Bible School) programs, I just got to where it was too much for me. I would still love to do those programs, they're very rewarding but it's too hard on a person of my age working with all the energy those youngsters have. Now i volunteer for the Red Cross doing registration, checking donors in for their appointments. I started this new phase in my life in 2004 and I love it. When people donate their time and blood it's a special time in their day (life) and mine. If you've ever donated blood then you know what I'm talking about. I also became a blood donor late in life, I think maybe about 2001 or 2. I feel that is one of the most important things I've done in my whole life. After Jerry's open-heart surgery in 2003, when he was well healed, he also became a blood donor. When you realize how much blood you received during a surgery like that you really know how valuable an asset your blood is.
