Edward's Story
Life
I am 7 years retired from teaching middle school math and science in Sumner, WA, married to Sandi for 49 years; 4 boys (3 living-we lost our second son Shaun in June of 01 as a result of Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome type IV.), 3 grandaughters(Kelsey, Erin, and Bailey), along with five grandsons. We are very busy with our grandkids. Sandi is now retired from the Sumner Schools also.
Son Mike and his family have recently moved to Alaska, Kevin is doing temp work in construction, and Kelly is employed at 3M.
I Graduated from CWSC in 74, Masters in Education from PLU, 1990. Taught guitar, drums and bass privately after school hours, I have recently stepped down as President of the Tacoma Corvette Club (Check out the Names and Ride link at the TCC Website), I spent 15 years total on the Executive Board of TCC, but now choose to be a participant in the activities.
I'm still a diehard Cougar fan, since older brother Mike played there in the late sixties. Even though son Kelly is finished there, we make the pilgrimage to Pullman several times a year for home games. I quit coaching football at Sumner High School a few years ago, so I could have a night off once in a while. Sandi and I are enjoying life at the moment.
College
How did I make it through school? Actually had a great GPA in college, but not sure how I managed it. Played with some great musicians, and met my wife there. If it wasn't for Sandi, I would have really struggled to finish my education. She made me get up and take care of business when I didn't feel like it due to being out all night playing
music. Classes at 8AM were tough, due to lack of sleep, but those were the days that we all could chew nails and spit tacks, right? Ugh!!! I shudder at the thought of the way I did things back then!!!!!!
For those of you who remember the jazz program at school, I personally owe much to John Moawad, who was our band director at Hale, and then at Central. He is responsible for guiding me through those tough years in school. He will always be the man!!!!! Due to John's influlence, we have had many of our 1968 through 1970s classmates that have become successful professional musicians after those high school years. Those musicians will undoubtebly tell you the same thing. I am very sorry that John is not still with us.
Ellensburg was a great town for those college years.
For those musicians out there, I am still playing professionally and hiring out on drums, bass and guitar. I work about 5-6 nights per month and enjoy the playing I get to do. I will continue to do so as long as I am physically able to do so. Will never be able to shake the urge to make music. Recently picked up a 1961 Gretsch Round Badge Starlight Sparkle drum kit that I wanted when I was a kid , but could not find at that time. It is certainly one of my greatest...Expand for more
thrills of my life. Love that kit! I still carry private music students weekly.
Played with many bands over the years, some nationally known, but most not. My favorite gig was the Roadhouse Blues Band, that I spent close to 10 years as their drummer. I do a lot of work in the blues scene.
For the hot rod enthusiasts, I restored a 1971 Sunflower yellow Corvette coupe, which took about 3 years to finish. I really wanted to find a 1970 car, but there were none available in the area at the time that I had money in my pocket! The 71 did very well in the local car shows, and I had a lot of fun with it. My dad told me to never own a car like that, so I decided to own several(Sorry, Pop!). My other at this moment is a 2017 Z51 Corvette Coupe that is just stupid-fast. I am wrestling with the big decision of whether to buy a C8 or not. Believe it or not, the 97-current corvettes get 28-30 MPG on the highway, so my pickup gets parked while the 17 coupe is being driven in the summertime. Go figure! If you are interested, check out the Tacoma Corvette Club Website, if you want to see some of my knucklehead friends and their cars. There are some really cool ones on the site.
We still make the pilgrimage to Dick's drive-in on Lake City Way several times a year. Very important item for the family.I have heard that the Italian Spaghetti House has closed, which broke our hearts.
Drop me a line if you feel like it! Love to hear about what you've been doing and what paths everyone has traveled. It seems as though those days at Hale were an eternity ago, doesn't it? I would love to reconnect with some of my old classmates. And I promise to be nice this time-LOL!!!!!!!!! (Time will do that for us)
I know that we all have gone through good times and bad times over the years, but we had never imagined the joys as well as the difficulties of life to be as intense and as deep as they have turned out to be. So Sandi and I have made it a point to celebrate our family and friends on an everyday basis and to try not to get caught up in the everyday shuffle of day to day living. It seems to work for us.
My best to you and to all of your loved ones that surround your lives, as they are truly a blessing. Be sure to give the kids and grandkids lots of hugs.
I have been making an effort to reconnect with classmates as we get older.
If I rubbed you the wrong way at all in our school years, take solace in the fact that you were not the only one! I promise I am much better now! LOL!
Sandi and I have been enjoying our summer home at Rainbow Beach Resort, and doing some traveling in the hot rod. Arizona in the winter time may be a possibility for us in the next year or so.
Please remember to support the music and arts in our community.
As John Moawad would say,
"Bops and Kisses!!!!!"
