Eileen's Story
Life Updated 7-16-11 and again 12-02-2019 and May 20, 3023
At first I wasn't going to do this and then I decided "oh, what the heck!!" I graduated from UConn in 72. I got married in 1971- on my 21st birthday. I am still married and we have a 32 year old daughter and a 28 year old son. I took an "early out" from the Social Security Administration in 1999 after being a claims representative for 24 of the 26 1/2 years that I was a federal employee. I definitely made the right choice on taking the retirement. And who knows what life has in store. I am active in the community of East Hartford - in Democratic Politics, the East Hartford Historical Society, the East Hartford Woman's Club, the East Hartford Lions Club, Friends of Center Cemetery, our cable access channel 5 and the Unitarian Universalist Society East in Manchester. While I am not a world traveler I did get to spend 2 1/2 weeks in Siracusa Sicily in August 1999 visiting a family who my husband and I rented from in the late 70's. That was a wonderful adventure. I love the internet - especially ebay. After I left Social Security, I subbed in the East Hartford School System for about 4 years and I worked as the Assistant Registrar of Vital Statistics for the Town of East Hartford from May of 2004 until February of 2009 when I was laid off. I was on unemployment and then got hired back as an INteroffice person in April of 2010 and within a week of being rehired got bumped again. Things really worked out because I am now an administrative clerk at the East Hartford Fire Department. I work for a great bunch of people and really believe that great results often come from what we see initially as not such positive stuff. Also I love Hindi movies and music. Well, that's an abbreviated autobiography. I am basically the same person I was in high school but a whole lot different if that makes any sense. Having interviewed literally thousands of people in my government career, I am a lot more talkative. Hope some of you will share your stories after reading mine. Bye for now,
Addendum, Today is December 2, 2019 and I am still with the EHFD. Our daughter got married last year. I am still active in the same organizations, except that Friends of Center Cemetery had to disban...Expand for more
d, but its mission is being continued through the Historical Society. I am currently the President of the Democratic Women's Club of East Hartford and so you can guess what my stand is on the current administration. So that is it for now. Time goes by very quickly, doesn't it. Two of my favorite quotes, " The only Paradise is a Paradise lost" - appreciate what you have now, and "You can have anything you want, but not everything you want". If we have another reunion, would like a program with the list of people attending so I know who is there. We have changed so much in 50 years, we really need help finding each other!
Today is May 20, 2023 - I retired from the Town of East Hartford from the Fire Department as a administrative clerk, on October 4, 2021 - 10/4 over and out. My husband has been ill so that has put a damper on many things. We really do need universal health care. We did make it through COVID. I have not gotten it yet, and I haven't had a cold in three years. I absolutely hate sore throats, lol. I do enjoy watching streaming options on the NET. I absolutely loved MONEY HEIST out of Spain. I do not mind subtitles. The show was about 42 episodes long and I loved it so much, I bought a t shirt. I just finished watching Breaking Bad, lol, that is from a long time ago. Have watched Yellow Jackets - our daughter graduated from High School in 96 which is contemporary to the timing of the show. And, back on track, I am still in the same civic groups that I have been for years. I am very happy in East Hartford, but do have precious memories of youth in Forestville and Bristol. And I am still a liberal Democrat and hate to see what is happening in this country and the world. The war in Ukraine is heinous. And that is all for now. It's a challenge living in this day and age. We are not expecting any grandchildren, I am very happy for my friends who do have them, but not having them, at least I don't have to worry about their futures. It is a dismal time, especially for women, I keep on saying I will stop and I keep on going, but times are tough, all are not created equal, and when we were in school, there was a lot that was not shared with us about our history. That is it, lol. More when I update the next time. Eileen
