Elaina's Story

Life Greetings former classmates. What a world we have today. I'm not sure what to make of it now that I'm 41. I have been living back in Middletown for 6 years now. I miss living in Florida but I treasure the time I've been spending with my parents, my sister and my nephews. My mother needs a lot of care so I call/visit her daily. Dad is still getting around okay and writing his letters to the editor all the time, which I type for him. I don't see too many people around town I feel I recognize. I'm curious how many from my class still live here in Middieville. I never thought I'd be coming back here but this is where my family is, so for the time being, this is where I'll be. I'm still into music and practice piano a lot now. I'm looking to find another place to live, too, maybe rent a house. We'll see. Take care, people. The world is a crazy place these days. I pray for peace daily. School When I think of high school, I think of how much I enjoyed playing music. I loved being in band, orchestra, pep band, jazz band, etc. I also liked Spanish class and am still keeping in touch with Mrs. Womack who is retired and lives in Arizona with her husband, Bob. I made quite a few friends in high school, too, but now most of those friendships have faded. I still think about many of you, though, and wish the best for you and your loved ones. I was very shy in high school, still am to some degree. I never went to homecoming or prom, nor was asked. It didn't matter to me. I was more concerned about being able to go to college and be independent. If anyone did like me in high school, I never knew it. I...Expand for more
had my few crushes, but I always kept them to myself. If I was asked would I like to live my high school days over again, I would resoundingly reply NO!!!! I'm feeling rather comfortable about being middle aged. College In 1986, I found a way to get into college. I got a small scholarship to study music at Miami University but I wasn't happy there. They didn't have much of a jazz program at the time and that is the kind of music I wanted to learn about. So, thanks to the help of my aunt and a famous euphonium player named Rich Matteson, I earned another scholarship to study at University of North Florida, where Mr. Matteson was starting an American School of Music with emphasis on jazz. There I became exposed to some of the greatest jazz legends on the planet and got to perform side by side with some remarkable young jazz players from all over the country. I became disheartened playing trombone and discovered I liked singing much better and was more talented as a singer, too. So, a singer I became and I earned my bachelor's degree. Also, I made my best and most cherished friends in college whom are still my best and most cherished friends today. Workplace Now, I'm happily teaching piano, voice and soon a little trombone to some very talented and precocious elementary and middle school students at the Montessori Academy of Cincinnati. Working at this school has been a huge blessing. I enjoy teaching there very much. I'm thinking about moving to Mason in the near future. We'll see. Music still makes me very happy and I'll spend the rest of my life paying hommage to the art of playing it.
