Originally from Edinburgh, Scotland, Elaine started school in Ottawa, grew up in Toronto and at age 10 returned to Ottawa where Elaine attended both Notre Dame HS and then Brookfield High School. 1972 One of my dearest friends, Andrea chose to take her own life. Her untimely death would change my life in ways I didn't know or understand then. As she bestowed the best/Worst Gift it would take me more than 39 years to appreciate! 1976 On a highway, approximately 2 am in the morning, my life forever changed. A three car crash which first pinned me between the cars, then spit me out and up into the air…I landed two lanes over on the highway directly in front of my friend's grave. I believe, thanks to Andrea, my head did NOT split like a melon on that frozen highway… This was the first gift from Andrea The next five years were filled with multiple surgeries, long hospital stays and lots of full leg casts. 1983 to 1985 I had three botched surgeries and way too many repairs to mention. 1997 Run down by a road-rage man who was trying to hit me and my kids. Covered in scars, looking like a map of the backroads of anywhere, I hid because I felt ugly and had such shame. 2016 The art of Kintsugi, a philosophy that treats breakage and repair (scars) as an honourable part of the history of an object, has changed my perspective.
