Elaine's Story

I'd like to say I'm still that crazy girl that grew up in the 50's and 60's in small town Baldwin. I have mixed memories of Baldwin, but now, having lived in the Orlando area of Florida for over 35 years, I remember the beauty of the seasons and the smell of salt air near my home on Eastern Blvd. I was your prototype 60's girl: art major in college, then, left wing politics while living in the East Village and later, lived on a farm in upstate N.Y. with like minded hippies. Had a baby, Zachary, in 1969, and faced with that reality, moved to Florida to be with my parents, who moved there in 1965. I became a born again Christian in 1972! Biggest event of my life, really. I married a Swiss citizen in 1972 and had our daughter, Brynja in 1974. We were married for 17 years. During that time I completed my registered nursing degree. I have now spent 23 years with the same company working as a field Hospice nurse. [I am also an alternative health care practitioner.] It is definitely a calling, and while it has it's stresses I really love the job. I can't say that I am overly ambitious. Maybe it's the anti-materialism of the 60's, I don't know. I live in a comfortable home on a lake in Casselberry. I am now married to Stan, another refugee from Long Island, of the same Norwegian heritage as myself. I am now a grandmother, and live around the corner from my daughter and her husband. My sister Gail lives 2 miles away and my other sister Linda lives in Miami. Would love to hear from people from Baldwin past...I wen...Expand for more
t to the 30th high school reunion in 1995 and the same cliques that were there in the 60's were there at the reunion. Amazing. It was fun to see how people had changed, but hadn't changed. Quite an experience. Baldwin as I remembered it was a town in transistion-small town in the 50's to full blown suburbia in the 60's. There were plenty of treed lots to play in in the 50's, a bit of country in my neighborhood. Down the street was a boat basin where I would go crabbing with my cousin Bobby, luring the crabs with a chicken head on a string. Snow storms in the winter where we would listen for the fire department siren indicating that school was canceled. Ice skating on Loft's pond and walking to the Baldwin movie theater on Saturday to see a triple feature, including all morning cartoons. All for 25 cents. Trips to Jones Beach, always staying on the West end, and boating trips to Short Beach or "Little America". High school was a highlight for many people with a lot of wonderful memories. For me it was another passage of life with a few close friends to have adventures with. My parents moved to Florida in September of 1965, so I spent summers in Florida with them and lost contact with my Baldwin roots. I guess you could say I am a full blown Floridian having seen Orlando pre as well as post Disney World. For many New Yorkers Florida is a huge adjustment-You either love it or hate it. Sometimes I miss the temperate climate, but I love the sunshine and beaches here, and now my entire family is here as well.
