Eleanor's Story

To all who knew me at YHS: Life has taken me many places since graduation. It was my good fortune to work my way through college/university at Rockaway Beach, and Lake Spofford Hotel/Resort in New Hampshire in the summers. They were both great learning experiences with young people like myself and also adults, frequently quite different. My journey continued at Concordia College in Bronxville, then Columbia University Faculty of Medicine, School of Nursing (B.S., R. N. and then I was also a faculty member), to Teachers College, Columbia University (MA). My marriage to Ray Hamilton lasted 15 years; we were two very different people. We have two beautiful children who are lovely individuals. Thereafter my doctorate in Clinical Psychology was obtained at the Florida Institute of Technology. This included study in Switzerland (Lugano and Leysin during the summers, and other psychology courses at John Jay in NYC, Bridgeport University and Fordham University where I took a number of courses (one was with a Polish priest who escaped from the Nazis on a bicycle). As an aside, I was shocked to first learn about the Holocost while working with an eye surgeon at the Institute of Ophthalmology in NYC, when THE RISE AND FALL OF THE THIRD REICH was published. The question of why this was not taught in history classes-that I recall- at YHS immediately rose in my mind. After reading this book I made it a point to study (I even took a course) the Holocaust for quite a few years thereafter. It was this study that stimulated my interest in working with people who have survived catastrophes. While living in the DC area I visited the Holocaust Museum a number of times. Other faculty appointments were at: Norwalk Community College, Hospital for Joint Diseases Nursing School, Southern Connecticut State University, University of Great Falls (in Montana-undergrad and graduate) and in the graduate Program in Pastoral Counseling at Loyola College in Maryland. Work with Native Americans took me to Wyoming, Montana and New Mexico (where I also studied on a post doctoral level at...Expand for more
the CG Jung Institute of Santa Fe). The main foci of my practice have been with trauma survivors (combat, 9/11, crime, serious accidents/illness and child abuse), depression and all with individuals from many different cultures. Growing up in Yonkers in a diverse neighborhood shaped my interest in other cultures. This interest has taken me to many countries: British Isles, Italy, Germany, Spain, Greece, Turkey, Portugal, Africa, Czechoslovakia, Austria, Luxembourg, Belgium, Holland, Russia, Ukraine (as the USSR) and India, to name some. Psychology and spirituality have been threads that have also been woven throughout my life, and I have also studied these connections rather deeply, having participated in sacred ceremonies from many spiritual paths. For eleven years I have been a student of Tibetan Buddhism, and thus, have been very involved with the Tibetan community in the US and in India. My daughter lives near me in Magnolia, Texas and my son lives in Seattle, Washington. My daughter has two children; a girl who is ten and a boy who is eight. In addition to the children there are many animals: nine horses, three ducks, twenty-four chickens of exotic varieties, two pot-bellied piglets, two dogs and three cats. In Texas it is now Spring and the Bluebonnets are out. Lady Bird Johnson often comes to mind while driving about, viewing the spectacular display of wild flowers with which we are blessed. My work takes me to peoples' homes, as my practice consists of doing therapy with those who have disabilities and cannot get out frequently. In addition, my time is spent reading, writing and taking an online course in Tibetan Buddhism, currently, The Way of the Bodhisaatva, with a Tibetan teacher from Bhutan. Large family gatherings on weekends are a real joy, where Texas barbecue is often the main fare. Time with friends is also a frequent blessing. This year my hope is to attend a month-long Buddhist retreat in upstate New York. (In a nutshell, this is generally the progression of my life until now: 3-24-08. ) Wishing you all many blessings, Eleanor
