Elisa's Story
Dear Friends, Hi I"m Elisa Horwitz. I'm 46 years old and live in Yokneam Elite in Israel. I'm married for the last 20years to a man from London named Michael Katten and we have 2 kids, Miri and Boaz who are born here, aged 18 and 16. I work here in court social work in the department of social services for one of the nicest regional councils here. I came here as a tourist after my master's degree graduation from the U of I at Chicago in 1984. After 6 months on a kibbutz working and studying the language I moved south to another program to Ashkelon when I did 6 months as a volunteer social worker. I met MIchael there and we managed somehow to get our lives in tandem in 1987 and married. At first the thought of being away from my beloved Chicago and my family were very difficult. but Israel is a place that intoxicates you with meaningful experiences, great people and great food. hooked and can't leave as I just couldn't give up the ability to just drive to Jerusalem to the Western Wall whenever it suits my fancy or float in the Dead Sea or hang out on the beaches here, or enjoy the antiquities. Like I said, I'm hooked. And life here for me is good, even though I"ve been through some very traumatic experiences during the wars. They are unique experiences that do strengthen you. But they do tend to divide you from others who may be insensitive to war situations cause they have never felt that very unique and horrific sense of terror when you are under attack from missiles. I wouldn't want to go through it again, but if I have to I will.
But life here is usually peaceful and it is great.
