Eliva's Story

I was married for almost 37 years to Benie (Buddy) Gresham until he, less than a year ago passed away. It was an accident when he was sawing on a pipe in our lagoon, fell, hit his head, and drown. We had 5 children, but twin boys passed away soon after birth. I have 10 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild. My children and grand children are my life. I used to play a lot of country music with my family & friends. I seconded on the piano when my Dad played his fiddle, along with my brothers. They played other instruments. I taught myself after high school to play the bass and acoustic guitars. I played bass in a 3-piece band with my brother Johnie. Sometmes I'd do a few songs with my brother Royace's Band, The Midnight Cowboys. I was born at Summerfield, 1 girl out of 6 boys. I attended a one-room country school, Summerfield School, 1 out of 5 students in my class. Then after graduating 8th grade, started 9th grade at Belle High. Members of my class at Summerfield School were Bill Strain, Merrill Hafner, Peggy Nie, and Kirk Withouse. The 8th grade year Kirk Withouse moved to Belle School. I was the oldest kid at Summerfield the 1962-63 school year. The school was closed down after the next school year. My...Expand for more
dad, Earl Buehrlen, went to Summerfield the first year it opened, and my brother, Royace, went to Summerfield the last year. We had fun times at Summerfield, we called ourselves the "Summerfield Stumpjumpers". Some games we played were cowboys, ball, stinkbase, soldiers, and sleigh riding down the long hill beside the grounds. The playground was sloped, so we could have a long ride down it on our sleds also. Of course, we learned too, it wasn't just play. They say that at one time the school had 60 students and only 1 teacher. My first and favorite teacher was Mrs. Lorene Slinkman. When I started high school, it was a complete different world for me. I was shy and didn't much know what to do at first. All my classes had before been in 1 big room. We'd sit on a bench at a table for reading class. Some classes were just 1 or 2 persons. It was a good life, growing up on the farm. I was just "one of the boys". They didn't leave me out, because I was a girl, like some brothers do. Growing up my cousin, Lois Baumgartner Jett, was a special part of my life. I liked having another girl to play with and she was so fun. She was my favorite cousin, and we loved going over to Aunt Hilda and Uncle Clarence Baumgartners.
