Elizabeth Allison:

Elizabeth's Story

Life I think there might be a reunion of some sort in the works, so I guess I'll jump in with a news flash from the former Betsey Allison, now Elizabeth Allison Craig. I'm the mother of 2-- a 28 year old son and a daughter turning 13 any second now-- and I'm still working in the rag trade, as a free-lance designer and consultant. I'm still somewhat stunned to find myself landed in suburbia, after spending many years in NYC. The move to NJ was occasioned by my marriage, 3 years ago, to Doug Craig, who does pharmacological research and also plays a pretty respectable blues guitar (he's responsible for my silly email address). Our dogs (2) and backyard birds and rosebushes have made the lifestyle change mostly a pleasure; however, I still miss NYC's diversity and cultural vibrancy, acutely. I sing a little jazz, Gospel sometimes, the blues occasionally, but much less than when I was in the city and had a group of musicians that I played with regularly. That's another part of my former life that I miss enormously-- working on finding a way back into it from my present vantage point of the 'burbs... I notice lately that I miss friends and family much more profoundly than...Expand for more
I used to, and feel the effect of distance much more than I did when I was younger-- my family is very spread out, no-one in Schenectady, and I can't see everyone anywhere near as often as I'd like to. I lost my Mom to cancer two years ago, and that was very, very tough-- still is. That experience brought home very keenly the swift rush of our days, and, again, the price of mobility. Even as I miss my adopted city, while finding at the same time reasons to love my adopted suburb, I envy friends who've stayed, with their families, all in the same town. I guess I'm going through an ordinary set of adjustments for a middle-class American woman in her early 50's. It's still a shock, though, to look in the mirror and see the undeniable effect of time. My son is kind enough to tell me I look pretty good for an old babe (talk about damning with faint praise) but I'm still wondering who I'm going to turn out to be. I'm an active and devout Episcopalian, a Democrat, and I do volunteer work-- but I look at the state of the world and think I should do much more to be an agent for change. I don't know-- each year, I have more questions and fewer answers. I guess that's progress?
