Liz's Story

After high school I worked some various jobs and became my stepmothers caregiver and it led to me enrolling in nursing school at Concorde Career Insitute where I graduated with my diploma in practical nursing. I started my nursing career working in long term care then into psychiatric long term care. After 10 years of nursing I retired from the profession and took the opportunity to move back to my home state of Washington to spend time with my father before his passing in 2014. From then I spent the next 6 years living in Yakima, Washington and reconnecting with my family in the state. In 2020 I had missed Colorado state so much that I decided to pack up my belongings and bring my best friend doggie Buddy to be near the close friends I had made when I lived in state prior. After moving back I did some contract work which I enjoyed quite a bit and finally accomplished a goal of mine for quite some time by finally moving into a place right downtown in the RiNo district which provided a lot of fun memories and exciting experiences. Then in the beginning of 2022 I moved near olde town Arvada and I was diagnosed with a condition which negatively affected my ability to work so at the time being I have started on the journey of applying for disability and trying to brainstorm ideas for my future as it didn’t go quite as planned. I also became a widow in July, but luckily I got my doggie to keep me company as I actually don’t have family living in Colorado with me. My life didn’t turn out ...Expand for more
the way I might have envisioned it back in high school and although I’ve gone through periods of great loss I’ve tried to maintain my sense of humor and always loved the people in my life as much as I could. I’ve learned a lot in my years since high school and I have to say the greatest lesson I learned was to love as much as my heart allowed and remember that the best medicine I’ve ever given or taken myself was and is laughter. There is truly healing qualities in the ability to laugh and not take everything too seriously. For fun I continue my love for music and singing as I was in choir all 4 years of high school by attending karaoke nights where I get to enjoy a passion that has never left me. I spend spare time learning about all sorts of random things as I found YouTube an excellent source of information and entertainment. I also try to find time to write when I have time and inspiration and maybe one day I’ll pen the book of my life which I’m sure will leave a lot amazed by all the things. There are quite a few of you that I remember from high school and have so many fond memories of my time at Horizon. I have to say one of the best things I’ve kept since high school is my Best friend and life long ride or die Katie (Vaughn) Barthel. It’s crazy to think we have been friends for over 25 years now but I can’t imagine my life without her in it. To the rest of you all I hope to make it to the next reunion to catch up with ya and fingers crossed I finally make it to this next one.
