Elizabeth's Story
Life
Well, where do I start?
37 years old, still single, no kids.
We left West Hartford right after 8th grade (1981) and moved to a hicktown - East Granby. Turned out to be OK in the end. I went on to UCONN and the University of New Haven for my Bachelor's Degree and then the University of Hartford for my Master's degree.
I am a workaholic - maybe that's why no kids or family. I work as a Health Services Administrator for one of the Male Correctional Facilities on Rikers Island in New York City. I have been in this position for 12 years and I am looking to get out of Correctional healthcare and into a traditional hospital. I hate New York, but it will do for now.
Not much else to tell.
Workplace
My first job was with the United Nations as a secretary for the UN Development Program - I worked there as a temp for 6 months...Expand for more
and commuted from West Haven, CT everyday. Then it was on to Rikers Island, where I started as the secretary to the Medical Director and within one year was promoted to a Clinic Administrator.
It has been steady work since then, but Correctional Healthcare stinks. The jails and prisons are dirty and you have to work in areas that were once housing areas sometimes. It is a thankless job and one I can't wait to get out of.
I started at the female jail in 2000 and what an experience. I managed a staff of 180, but now I am in a smaller male facility with 120 staff. It is a nice break, but I am ready to get back into the thick of things
I have been looking vigorously for another job, but in the New Jersey area. I lived there for 3 years and why I came back to New York - only God knows.
I can't wait to leave Rikers and New York.
