Ellen's Story

Hello to all my fellow Dysart Classmates. I hope you're all doing well as possible now that we're so much older. Boy, now that we're grown and are white-haired grandparents, don't those years back in school seem like they were fun? I remember back then that I couldn't wait to get out of school and have a life of my own. In fact, I quit school and got married so I could do just that-- we were married 43 years when Dan passed away. But I later finished high school in night classes and then went to college and earned a Bachelors Degree in Information Systems. I went to work at Wal-Mart home office in their Information Systems Department and then worked in various divisions throughout my 20 year career. I loved it and would probably still be there if I hadn't begun having health issues and needed to retire. I married Dan Dickinson in August 1969 and we went off to a life in the Navy--first as a fleet sailor, and then as a Navy Seabee (which he enjoyed much more). We have two children, 9 grandchildren, 2 step-grandchildren, and 7 great-grandchildren. After his injury in the Seabees and subsequent medical retirement from the Navy, we moved to Gravette, Arkansas where my sister Kathy and her husband Bill were living. We raised our children and loved being part of our grandchildren's lives as they were frequent visitors in our home and stayed overnight many weekends and even a week at a time during the summers. r so the cousins could play together. I miss them now they're grown and went through a second period of "empty nest syndrome" besides the period I went through after our children left home to live their own lives. Sadly Dan passed away in April 2012 due to complications of kidney cancer. I felt as if my life was over, too, and I've never felt such heavy grief. I wasn't sure what God had left for me to do, but I knew I was in His capable hands so I decided to just take one day at a time, and I focused on church activities, visiting our children and grandchildren, and even joined our local Senior Center. Two and one-half years later, my youngest sister Linda set me up on a blind date with a Christian man who was a widower and who worked with her driving school buses part-time. He was a retired farmer and still lived on the land he purchased in 1986. We bonded over grieving for our spouses. Within a month, he asked me to marry him and I said YES. We were married in December 2014 and continue to have a great life together. With advancing age we have health challenges but have managed to meet each one as they come. I thought I wanted to die, too, when Dan died, but God had something different planned for me. Jeremiah 29:11 is very true! "For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." All we have to do is follow the Lord and keep his commandments!
