Ellyn's Story
In 1962, as a graduate of Altus High School, life ahead looked exciting. I was in love with David Carlton and we were engaged in May, 1962. Our wedding was held at the Church of Christ on Hudson in Altus. It was a beautiful wedding with my sister as bridesmaid, and Dave had his best friend, Jim Chumley, as his best man.
As life continued, I bore Ardith June 13, 1963 at Altus Air Force Base hospital and Geoffrey Todd March 15, 1967 in Tiffin, Ohio. We lived in Fostoria, Ohio at the time. Dave worked for the Fostoria newspaper.
It was at the local library where I found a book about Richard Haliburton's travels around the world. He talked about seeing the Rose Red City of Petra. He sparked a part of ...Expand for more
my heart and it became a lifelong dream to travel and see "What's out there". So whether it's what's out in space or on this planet Earth, I want to know. Earlier in the high school library I had run across black and white photographs of galaxies and gas giants and the solar system map of the planets and where we were located in the Sagitarius Arm of the Milky Way. That began the quest to know more of what is out there.
We moved to Battle Creek for Dave's job in 1969. We lived at 163 Winter Street. It was a fun house. I remember having Dave's sister, Dode, and her family for Thanksgiving one year. I am not a cook but I am sure I read the directions on the pumpkin pie filling label....to be continued
