informis.
the romans said of ugliness
it has no form,
a man's misery, bleached skies,
the war between desire
and dailiness. i thought
this morning of wallace stevens...
the love of books
is for children
who glimpse in them
a life to come, but
i have come
to that life and
feel uneasy
with the love of books.
this is my life.
time islanded
in poems of dwindled time.
there is no other world..."

And the stars overhead shine a little—no more or less than usual—and whether it is daylight and they are invisible or whether it is night and they are the embers of a blacksmith’s fire, they shine and you are grateful.

More about Emily:"ME
i am a secretive and knotted and altogether too transparent. i am a tight oxymoron. i feel ancient in mind but inexperienced in life. i am thirty and engaged in a brutal battle against my own stasis. i fear stagnation. i carry potential as both a threat and a burden, and i worry too much for my own good.
ME AND PAINT
i once painted my left arm and indigo-blue because it was too beautiful for canvas alone. i learned my lesson, because oil paint? is not easily undone. what a tidy allegory: i am an indigo-blue oil paint: intriguing, yes - but be careful: i am not easily undone.
IF I WERE A BOOK COVER
i have a shy, intellectual exterior with the heart of an artist, a dork, an adventurer. i'm a reader, a homebody, a traveler, a quiet but persistent writer, an explorer of things both tangible and not, and entirely ill-defined.
SEEK
fundamentally, i both admire and seek greatness in all its diversity. i am in pursuit of personal evolution. i relish words...Expand for more
. i appreciate silence. i would like to hang glide on 6 of the 7 continents, explore new zealand's literary history, and tell a story worth telling before i die. i try to stay present, most days... but i always return to the wandering, roaming me.
JOY-GIVERS
trekking through the new modern wing of the art institute, kayaking down the chicago river, experiencing wrigley from the bleacher seats at the first sign of spring, laughing through a dance class, or finger painting a giant mural... wrap me up a novelty/watch me tear it open.
NINE TO FIVE
i've worked for a restaurant in various capacities for eight years, reveling in my fair share of mis-adventure, physical comedy, trials, outrage, knitship-friends, and honest growth. and now it's over. sharp turn. full stop. next up: i plan to pursue a career in psychology - currently i work at the family institute at northwestern (research dept: psychotherapy change project).
THE GOD THING
i do not believe in a higher power, and i feel compelled to apologize for that. it's something i'm working on (the impulse to apologize, not the belief). despite the non-believer status i AM awed by the power of faith alone. not by supplication or expectation of response; but because i believe "god" is IN the prayer, not above it.
SCHOOL DAZE
ncs to kenyon to nu, so far i've been a spec of algae in a sea of purple. i graduated with a degree in political science with a focus on ancient political philosophy. i know: it's about as practical as it sounds. And twenty seven times more passionate than you could imagine. I'm now back in school for clinical psychology - currently completing northwestern's (post-bac pre-clinical) psych program. looking forward to a one-day ph.d.
NOOKS AND PERCHES
for serenity: my reading nook, armed with a giant mug of green tea. for people watching: the perch at michigan ave. and lake. coffee: ipsento in bucktown. breakfast: lula cafe in logan square. travel: dublin, prague, rome, kyoto, across any pond and to the summit of any peak...
FAVORITES
words, mindfulness, laughter, warm blankets on cold toes, secrets, falling down and the swish of sheets barely sweeping the floor on my way to construct a fort. intimate conversation, weather-worn maps, grilled cheeses, heart-songs, laughing outside the lines, and ultimately, forcefully, those rare moments of change...".
