Emily's Story
Life
In 1998, a tech in a car dealership I worked at found 3 baby field mice in the glove compartment of a car being serviced. The "guys" said they should just drown them, but I grabbed them up and took them home. That was the beginning of my becoming the Wildlife Rehabilitation Specialist for all counties north of Hinkley. I have taken in 200 to 250 animals per year, all on a volunteer and donation basis. That means I have lived as a pauper for 6 years. To support my wildlife addiction, I have worked just about every job there is. Most jobs are a tad concerned if you have to leave because the State Troopers are calling you to the site of a downed Bald Eagle. They have a tendancy to fire you for this after a while. Been there, done that. Becoming a wildlife specialist has been an enormous and amazing undertaking. There is no school you can go to for this, you just get the animal, call people that know more than you do, and jump right in. If you ever see me, ask me about my Bald Eagle scar... m respected in the wildlife community. This was an especially difficult achievement since I have a tendency to speak before I think and can not hide my facial expressions of irritation or disgust when the mood strikes me, but once people get past my straight forward approach and the fact that I am still a natural blonde with a wicked sense of humor (if they can stick around that long), they realize that I do know what I am talking about and doing. I have also trained numorous volunteers, apologizing right up front about my sometimes vulgar language, done presentations in the schools and colleges in the area and am the designated wildlife specialist for all threatened and endangered species of our area. It has been an incredible journey that is about to take a little break.
This summer I am going to scale back considerably on the wildlife and focus on going back to school for my Registered Nursing certification. I will continue to work full time as always at Qwest, but otherwise, school will be my only focus for the time being.
