Emily's Story

Life I love and work in Columbia. My fiance and I bought a house here in 2003 and we are now planning our wedding for this fall. My house is awesome-- it's in a great neighborhood and very conveniently located to downtown and to work. I love working to furnish and decorate our home, inside and out. I have the cutest doggie in the world-- her name is CiCi and she was a "rescue" dog we got from a place called Pets, Inc. I'm really kind of boring now, and I love it!! School High school meant the Spirit of Gold marching band, Mr. Lloyd's French class, and Beta Club-- those are the things that I did for all four years and so those are what obviously made the most lasting impressions. Ahh... the marching band. Football games and competitions were fabulous! I also loved concert season: all those auditions and endlessly practicing scales. I was fortunate enough to have been in Symphonic Band class starting as a freshman, so that year while I missed out on some of my peers' drama in Concert Band, I got a sneak peak at the loves and lives of the upperclassmen. I remember skipping my P.E. class for days at a time and just going to hang out either in the bandroom or the chorus room, until I got caught. I remember getting new uniforms our senior year and that they were much warmer than the old ones-- so warm that I often would pass out at the end of a competiton or parade! Carrying that bass drum around was tough enough without having to wear a wool jacket, too! French class was toujours tres amusante! Monsieur Lloyd was a magnificent teacher; I really appreciated how he wanted us to not only study the French language, but also the history and culture. We listened to pop songs-- a different one each week-- and watched French films and television. We'd also have "All-French" periods, when the French flag would replace the American flag at the front of the room and no English was allowed! We came up with some pretty creative ways to express ourselves in Franglais. The very best times were when we had Food Days, once per quarter. Katie and I made quic...Expand for more
hes, and a mousse au choclat that gave everyone a buzz. My French name was Genevieve, Katie was Gabrielle, and Jan was Sophie. Jeff Hair was Xavier, and Richie Parrish was Dieudonne. I used to give John Heckman the answers to the quizzes at lunch since I had French I 2nd period and he had it last. Beta Club meant meetings and service projects (like the Haunted House), but most of all, the annual state convention and subsequent national convention. All those after school sessions putting together dazzling displays of talent featuring song and dance... the so-called "Solid Gold dancers"... Art Attack... Karen, Katie and I singing and dancing in our pajamas in the hallway to R.E.M.'s "Stand"... We Will Stand... Clint Morrison doing the tinikling... Bus Stop... Ben Gatrelle's 45 minute joke... the Gay Dolphin... one year going to Greenville insted of Myrtle Beach thanks to Hugo... Disney World... Dallas... the quiz bowl team that consisted of me, Eric Hatchett, Ben Martin, and Ivan Fradejas... Randi Ayen's bid for the presidency ... Sandy "Nascar" and Amy "Swerve" Onofrio... not going to convention as a senior because I was academically ineligible... ahh! Good times, all! College I entered the University of South Carolina in the fall of 1991, but did not actually graduate until May of 1999. Workplace I used to live and work in Sumter, where I taught at Crestwood High. It was a great school, and in addition to being an English teacher, I was also a cheerleading coach, assistant band director, the Junior Board sponsor, and advisor of WCHS, the broadcast club whose members did the morning and afternoon announcements. After a while, I wanted both a change of pace and change of venue, so I moved back to Columbia. Now I work at my other alma mater, the University of South Carolina, as the Assistant Director of Orientation and Testing. My job is great-- training and educating the student staff of Orientation Leaders, as well as planning and executing programs for incoming students. I can't believe how lucky I am to work at a place that I love so much!
