Eric's Story
After high school, I hitchhiked to San Francisco and back with Darcy Wahlberg. When we got home, I had to go to work. I framed houses, mixed mud, laid sewer pipe, DJ'd, built roads and drove bus. I got married and divorced and we had one child.
In September 1980, I went back to school, ÃÂÃÂtwo years at Grant MacEwan to get a diploma in advertising & PR. After graduation, I worked about three years in provincial government PR, then went out on my own as a freelance consultant. I went to Scandinavia in the fall of 1986. When I returned, my roommate picked me up from the airport and asked: "What did you learn?"
"That Edmonton is a wonderful place to live, but it's also a wonderful place to be from," I replied. "I've always wanted to move to London, England," he said. "I've always wanted to move to Toronto," I semi-whispered, looking over my shoulder to make sure nobody heard me.
At the end of March, 1987, Stewie flew to London to live, and I packed all my...Expand for more
worldly possessions into my Dodge Colt, drove to Toronto, and have been here since.
It has been an incredible ride. I married an absolutely wonderful woman and we raised two children together. Both will be through university in 2012 (wooo hooooo!) and out on their own. They both turned out to be great young people, in spite of and despite their old man.
Today, I have a great consulting business and teach karate three nights a week (when I'm in town). My spouse is also a black belt and takes over when I'm not there.
I have two motorcycles, one for the city and one for the highway. We've decided that I like my work too much to retire, so we're retiring one summer at a time and taking motorcycle trips. We went to PEI in 2008, Washington, New York and New England in 2009, Vancouver Island in 2010, and Newfoundland in 2011. It is, truly, a beautiful world.
Like everyone, we have good days and bad. But as long as there are more good than bad, who can complain?
