Eric's Story
Connect to me on facebook if you want to chat. Life chronologically: rock band, sales, tech support, web design, graphic art, videogame art, game art director, game creative director.
So that's the short version for the people that don't want to pay (I don't blame them). Here's the longer version:
1991-1995
After school I grew out my hair and played in metal bands. I moved to San Diego for a few months and came back. I was supporting myself working at pizza places. Very glamorous.
1995
I wanted out of the pizza business and was offered a job selling audio/video equipment on the condition that I cut my hair. The tradeoff was acceptable to me, although my gf at the time was devastated about my cut hair. I continued to play in my rock band, and we released a couple demos.
1997
I worked for a few places selling A/V and worked for myself doing home theater installations. I wanted to get away from commission sales, so I ended up with a job selling office furniture downtown Seattle at Ducky's. My father died in '97 at the age of 83. Good guy. Wish he was still with me.
1998
Pretty soon I wanted out of sales completely, and I ended up with a job doing customer service for MindSpring (now EarthLink). Working for MindSpring taught me a lot about how a large company can hold onto a great and positive employee culture and still be wildly successful.
It became clear that the band was never going to be big, so I joined a grunge/dub fusion act that was cool, but they didn't have a strong enough drive to succeed. I started doing ambient techno/electronica stuff for fun, and I wish I had more time now to keep working on it.
Up to this point I was doing music as my main hobby/off time career aspiration. I got to know the ins and outs of the business side of music over the previous several years and then realized what I wanted for my lifestyle didn't fit in with having a music career, especially as my main source of income, so it was time to move on.
1999
I started studying web design in all my spare time, and I already had a great aptitude for graphics and computers, so it was natural. I left MindSpring and did web development for a startup dotcom in Bellevue. That company dot-bombed and I went back to EarthLink doing tech support. I worked my way up the ranks there, en...Expand for more
ding up a senior broadband tech and doing home networking support.
2000
While doing tech support I continued to study web development and began doing freelance web work and graphic design in my off time. I still find it a lot of fun and take the occasional contract. At this time I started tinkering around with videogame mods, specifically for Quake III and Age of Empires II.
2001
Still doing tech support and freelance web/graphic design, I got involved with a few guys making an ambitious racing mod for EA's F1 2001. We formed an official group (SimBin Development Team) and released a couple versions of the mod, which earned us some US and European press on our work.
2002
Still doing tech support and working with the mod guys. We released GTR2002, a mod for F1 2002. This mod was huge, won several awards and was featured in magazines and websites around the world. This attracted the attention of a real-life racer in the series we were simulating, and he approached us about making a retail version of the game. We jumped at the chance and formed SimBin Development Team AB as an official company, HQ'd in Sweden.
2003
EarthLink shut down their office in Seattle and we all were laid off. The timing was perfect, though, as I began working full time for SimBin, as Art Director on GTR.
2004-05
As Art Director at SimBin I oversaw a globally distributed team of artists and did production work myself on GTR. GTR was published by EA in Germany to rave reviews, and subsequently published by Atari in Europe and UK, and finally by Take2 in North America, winning several awards along the way.
We began working on a sister project, called GT Legends based on classic muscle cars and touring cars, which was released in 2005 under a new dev company name - Blimey! Games.
GT Legends was followed up with GTR 2, which received much critical acclaim.
I left Blimey Games in 2007 and began working for a game studio in Austin, Texas called Mock Science where I'm currently working as a Creative Director.
If you made it all the way to the end you may be wondering why there's so much info here. I figure the random people that will stop by won't care, and the people that do care can find out. If you fall into the latter category, drop me a note (facebook is good), and let's get in touch!
