Eric's Story

Life I'm glad to have this opportunity to share a bit of my life with my former classmates and those I served with in the Air Force. I moved to San Diego in January 1999 after 11 years in the Air Force. There are two things that I have done in my life that dramatically influenced and changed my life for the better. The first thing was going to St. Henry's Prep. If there is such a thing as being "born again" I certainly was at St. Henry's in almost a literal sense. I left there a very different person. I went on to two years of college seminary. I joined the Air Force, where I was assigned as a Law Enforcement Specialist. During my enlistment I served at McConnell AFB, KS, Incirlik AB, Turkey, and Scott AFB, IL. While at Scott AFB I had two 3 month temporary duty assignments in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. I received my Associates degree in Criminal Justice from the Community College of the Air Force. I soon discovered that I did not want to pursue a law enforcement career. I received my B.S. Workforce Education, Training and Development from Southern Illinois University. I moved to San Diego where Lockheed Martin hired me as Job Retention Adviser in August 1999. I was promoted to the Quality Assurance team for the East and North San Diego offices (March 2001). In July 2001 I was offered an IS position as Sr. Training Coordinator with a major health care company ...Expand for more
in San Diego. I developed training documentation, video and interactive tutorials to train about 7000 users of a new electronic medical record application. In January 2005 my position was changed to Systems Analyst, supporting the same software for which I developed training. I am now a Sr. Systems Analyst. Sharp HealthCare is a 2007 Award Recipient Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award. As far as my personal life, some of you have wondered, some of you know. I'm gay. In the USAF, I experienced only minimal difficulty until the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" debate. Some figured it out while I was stationed in Turkey in 1989, including the Commander. But I guess no one cared. I was treated very well. When I was at Scott AFB, I was investigated after someone made an accusation. That was a very difficult time. I spent my last two years as Training Manager and did not experience any problems. I was honorably discharged as an Staff Sergeant (E-5) in December 1998. Now I am in sunny San Diego. Two of my high school classmates live close by, within a mile or two. In July 2001, my family asked me to take in one of my nephews temporarily due to a difficult family situation. I became a single parent overnight. That was quite a lifestyle change. He is still with me...it wasn't as temporary as I thought. He is a great kid. He is 16 and in his Sophomore year of high school.
