Eric's Story

Life I joined the Air Force in October '86 and was stationed at Holloman AFB, New Mexico for 2.5 years. Had some girl trouble and was pretty screwed up over that for quite a few years - and got over it. After NM, I went to Izmir, Turkey for 1.5 years - Turkey rocks! Not even what I expected - very cool. Had a blast there and discovered why Europe is so cool. Also learned how to play racquetball - had a most excellent time. Then, instead of going to my next assignment in Vicenza, Italy, I was diverted to San Angelo, Texas in 1991 - where I remain to this day. I'm not totally thrilled with 'Angelo (it's not Italy after all), but I met my wife who was stationed here (she recently separated from the Air Force) so we bought a house and I've had some good local jobs after I separated from the Air Force in Oct '96 (after feeling like I wasted 10 years) but we're doing fine. I am currently an Information Assurance Manager (Dept of Defense IT Systems) and network system administrator/hardware maintenance technician for some of the Air Force's computer systems on the base - fun job with great pay, but it's still not drafting. Some of my interests include playing music with the San Angelo Community Band and Ice House Brass, four-wheeling, auto mechanics, racing remote control cars (against my buddies), building and using PC's, airbrushing racquetball, paintball, mountain biking and rollerblading, woodworking, and yes - I'm still drawing. I use the computer a lot for that now along with airbrushing. No kids, except for a dog and a cat (cats...what were we thinking...oh well - they're OK). Most of all - Missing Utah. San Angelo Texas is hot, flat, dusty, fairly humid at times, nothing is green, and very remote - which all put together...kinda sucks. But, most of the people I've met here are cool and the cost of living is pretty cheap. Now quit reading this and check out the stuff on the message board - it's cool. Don't forget to visit my website and drop me a note. And nothing's changed as of: 28 Feb 2009 School I started High School with a major enjoyment for music, and was in the various bands. I also had the desire to be an Architect and had a strong drafting background that carried on as I took every drafting class Alta offered during my 4 years there. As a reward for all my training during senior year, I won Region II and State level Architectural Drafting competitions through VICA. I also competed at the VICA Nationals in Phoenix during the summer of 1986 and placed 3rd in my division. Unfortunately, the Air Force had other plans for me and did not take advantage of my apparent skills. I had a blast at Alta and would do it all over again if given th...Expand for more
e chance. I'd do a couple things differently and make a couple different choices (like not join the Air Force, for one), but I loved my time there for the most part. Workplace I wish I could tell you, but it's classified. Stayed in San Angelo after leaving the Air Force in the same job through all six company changes, a one-year stint as a civil service employee, then 2.5 more years with another contractor company as well as while I was active duty Air Force. Explanation: When I was in the Air Force, I operated some of the computer systems on base. When I left the Air Force, I hired on as a contractor to maintain the same systems. During that time, I worked for the following companies that lost and/or gained the contract over the years: Management Technologies (ManTech) BTG, Inc. (now Titan Corp.) ACS Defense, Inc. Lockheed Martin Information Technologies (which absorbed ACS in 2003) Civil Service General Dynamics Civil Service (present) On 17 May, 2004, I began a new career as a Civil Service employee. I must say that had been the best move in my career thusfar. Unfortunately, the budget was not approved, and my position went away after a year - that was the 'risk' portion of that job. But, another contractor (General Dynamics) had a presence in the office, and extended to contract to hire us 'temps' - been there up until Sep '07, when a new Civil Service job came up as the Information Assurance Manager. I'm in charge of making sure the military's computer training systems are managed and operated in a secure and legal manner at Goodfellow Air Force Base - a big job, but so far so good. Military Got off on the wrong foot from the start. I should've been an Civil Engineer/Architect for the Air Force, but eventually, they hosed me - and I took it anyway. I failed a color-vision test, and by their standards wasn't qualified to become a draftsman, despite my hefty package of credentials. So, I basically spun my wheels for 10 years as a Computer Systems Operator - right before computers actually got cool. Presently, I'm still stuck in Texas as a Government employee after 11 years as a Defense Contractor. I'm working at the same base from where I left the military. The main benefits I gained from the military were meeting my wife and the opportunity to see some more of the world. All of the people I've met through my life and experiences so far have pretty much made up for my poor choice of joining the military under the conditions I accepted at the time. Would I do it all over again? Probably not, although it did help me grow up a lot because of the people I met. And I might not have gotten that had I not joined and gotten away from 'home.'
