Eric's Story
Life
After graduation, I headed off to South Bend, IN and four years at Notre Dame commencing with a degree in Finance and a commission as a 2nd Lieutenant in the US Army. After a year in El Paso, TX, I spent three years stationed in Germany and loved it. Upon returning to the United States in 1991, I joined Pizza Hut as a delivery driver. Not really. Actually, I managed a bunch of restaurants in Detroit, MI. I also reconnected with a special lady that I had met in Oregon in 1987 during the summer after college. Lisa and I married in 1994 while living in Chicago. Pizza Hut Corp finally took us to Dallas and in 1997, I chose to leave for an opportunity to run a major business in San Francisco. Alas, life is a journey with a few potholes and this proved to be one of them. I left this startup after a year and joined my current company, ADVO, as their Vice President of Client Services. I travel too much, but love working with people across the US. You may know my company for the missing child card that comes in the mail. We recovered our 121st child recently. With two great boys (Collin - 6, Ian - 4), I can only imagine the tragic loss of a child.
I still am a runner and will be competing in my third Hood-to-Coast with my wife this summer. Despite Coach Mike Stortz, I still play a fair amount of hoops. However, my two boys take up a majority of my time and they are the center core of my world.
I have yet to realize all my dreams, but we are still young and the dreams still fresh!
2011 update - well life throws you curve balls and some times you just can't handle it like you hope. In 2008, my then wife had an extended affair with one of my best...Expand for more
friends in Connecticut - the guy I coached baseball with for five years and spent more time with my son than any other man. I confirmed the affair on New Year's Eve of '08. It was devastating. I tried for four months to channel the anger and pain elsewhere - lost 42lbs and was running times I hadn't seen since just after high school. My 18 year relationship ended when I came to realize I could never trust her again and that the lack of respect of her by me (she brought him into my family's home numerous times) was a deal breaker. It has been hard on my sons (14, 12) and the broken family is a horrible result for them. However, Providence has a way of giving back when you cross the desert successfully. I met an amazing woman and we have been together for 18 months. We are building a remarkable life together and I have been truly blessed. Many stood by me during my ordeal (and take the anger and pain away from me) and told me that good things would happen. They have. I would recommend a book, "Five Love Languages" by Dr. Chapman. No matter how strong your relationship, you can always work on communication. Don't hesitate. My life is better and I "upgraded." However, it was not the path I would have chosen to take. Good luck.
School
I have incredibly fond memories of my school years. I learned enough about myself to springboard me to future successes in life while developing life long friends. I find Salem very sheltered when I visit now, but it was the right size city for me during my youth; big enough to explore while being small enough to feel safe. I think I was blessed with very fine teachers not just in the academics, but life as well.
