Eric M.'s Story
I'm disappointed that I was unable to graduate with the Flint Southwestern class of '69. Unfortunately, my family moved in the middle of our 11th grade to Oak Park, MI where I graduated with the class of '69 from Oak Park.
A fond memory was setting Flint Southwestern High's Sit Up Record after Mr. Mazza stopped me at 150 on Friday. I was determend to break the old record of 425 and hit 1,000 and beat the city record on Monday. On Monday, with Sam Stewart holding my legs I reached 500, before Mr. Mazza once again stopped me. At least I set a new school record. In the pool I fell short by one tenth of a second of Southwestern's 25 yard free style record which was 11.2. I did 11.3.
My favorite teacher of all time was Flint Southwestern's Mr. Plourde. He mixed humor and proper etiquette with education.
Having grown up in Flint with our family owning scrap yards and auto parts stores, which allowed me to follow my passion and move from the age of four building model cars to working on real cars at the age of ten. After taking many math and drafting courses both at Zimmerman Jr High School and Southwestern my career path changed with the move to Oak Park High School who did not offer the same engineering courses as Southwestern. It changed from wanting to go to GMI and becoming a mechanical engineer to looking at becoming some type of physician.
After Graduating the University of Michigan in 1975 with my Bachelor's degree, I then went onto Logan College of Chiropractic in Chesterfield, Mo outside of St. Louis. There I received my Doctor of Chiropractic, D.C. degree in 1979.
While attending Logan I married Janis Terebelo in 1976. I had known Janis' brother Bennett from Bagely Elementary School in Detroit. I had attended Bagley from Kindergarden through the middle of Fifth grade.
After Graduating Logan Janis and I returned to Southfield,...Expand for more
Mi. I began a practice and we began a family. Our son Sam was born in 1981.
While Janis was preganent with our daughter, Stefanie we moved to West Bloomfield, MI. in 1983.
I have been a very lucky person to not only be able to enjoy what I am doing with my career, but to be able to still persue my passions for cars. I have restored, shown, judged and raced some of them since 1986. I have orginized car shows and worked with Pontiac Motors, Domino's Farms and the Cities of Pontiac, Birmingham and Ferndale to make these shows a sucess. I have become a person persued by newspapers, car enthusiast magazines and automotive authors for my knowledge and personal views. I feel very honored to have met and become respected by many automotive icons of our time.
Though everything above is important to me, the most rewarding part of life has been the experience of having the most wonderful wife and children any man could ever ask for. Like me, they too have carved out paths of sucess and happiness.
Janis received her MSW and CSW. She works as a school social worker in the West Bloomfield School System.
Sam gradauted Michigan State Univerity with Honors from the Eli Broad School of Business then went onto be a stock and bond trader in Manhattan, Ny. After three years of trading he couldn't see himself doing this the rest of his life. He than went onto law school at the Yeshiva, Cardoza, in Manhattan, NY. where he just finished his first year of study and is now clerking for a New York City Judge in Lower Manhattan.
Stefanie Graduated the University of Michigan with Honors and went on to law school achieving Law Review and her law degree from the Univeristy of Michigan. She will be soon leaving Michigan for a job with a Manhattan Law firm.
Closeness, encouragement, hard work, good friends and hobbies have been fun and rewarding to our family.
