HQ in Washington DC. Designated to re-write the DOC IT Security Porgram Policy and complete compliance reviews for IT security on DOC operating units. What a year!
- WTF! All the contracting work disapeared. Poof, gone. Well, the major mishap was the budgeting by the Fed's in the year after 9/11/01. The biggest contracts came right on the heels of that tragic event, in an effort to shore up security. Money was front loaded too, so they ran out near the beginning of FY 03. I had to regroup. Decided to subcontract with a long standing partner company, Reston Consulting Group. One of the DOC operating units (NOAA) was looking to replace talent that left the NOAA Computer Incident Response Team (N-CIRT) there. I wrote the policies that established the N-CIRT. Weird how things work out. It's a stellar gig. Huge cut in salary, it's worth it. The people are the best in NOAA, and great to work with. Later in the year tragedy strikes my family. It's a dark time. My wife is diagnosed with stage IV stomach cancer, she has to have a total gastrectomy. 145 lbs to 90 in less than a month. She retires. Rough times lay ahead, but our love is stronger than any illness. Just prior, my brother almost dies of complications from sickle cell anemia. He's one strong cat. It runs in the family. :-)
- Most of the year is spent nursing my wife to better health and adjusting to a new lifestyle. My wife is the strongest person I've ever known. It turns out ok, she starts to gain a little weight up to 100 lbs.
- Things are back on track, so to speak. Business is ok. The NOAA gig is settling in. I take my boo to St. Maarten (2nd time) just the two of us. In December they confirm a mass in my wife's abdomen. We can survive.
- Since January I have been dealing with another *big* change in schedule. Chemo started again. Graduated my (step)son. What a blessing, he's doing well! Oct 11, 2006, my brother and best friend Frank III died. I was with him. :-(((
