Eric's Story
Life
Dateline: June 2006:
Well, I finally did it. I am a married man for the first (and only) time. Joanna Katz is the lucky woman and to ensure that I really popped the question and asked for her hand in married, we got married twice - seriously.
We were married in my parent's synagogue in front of all of our San Diego friends and family and some of Joanna's family.
Then, we took 100 more friends and family and boarded a plane for Cabo San Lucas two days later for a four-day wedding weekend. Of course we stayed quite a long time afterward.
On the business front, I am back in the start-up mode, having overcome my need to help the world! I am sure all of you corporate lifers can appreciate that.
I have partnered with three extremely bright businessmen and have launched a company called GiftFlix. We have created the first-ever, interactive Gift Card which makes its debut in September 2006. Current we have signed up nearly 5,000 retailers to sell our product.
More as we progress ...
In November '04, I took a 16-month sabbatical from corporate life, and was the CEO of a Non Profit here in Los Angeles.
From 1996 through 2004 I was at DIRECTV in Los Angeles for more than eight years overseeing both the PPV Events Marketing Team and the Publishing Division (which I launched in '97).
After leaving Gompers / Crawford (where I was on the swim team), I ...Expand for more
went to SDSU and majored in Africana Studies and for my final two years was the Sports Editor of The Daily Aztec, the student-run newspaper.
After finishing SDSU, I traveled the country on the golf tour - working, not playing - and later was the Managing Editor of Padres Magazine for the San Diego Padres (1996 season).
In 1996, I was recruited to this little start-up called DIRECTV, so I moved to LA in early '97 and haven't looked back.
I founded two companies in the early 00's, and have now begun the creation of my third (above):
WINTER PUBLICATIONS: my company published "This Gracious Season: Barry Bonds & The Greatest Year in Baseball," by Josh Suchon in 2002. We printed and sold nearly 25,000 books across the country. Not a bad feat for the little guys in publishing.
I bought the rights to the story by Suchon, who is one of four traveling beat writers who cover the SF Giants (he now covers the Oakland A's).
W2-MANAGEMENT: I ran a Music Management company that managed bands, such as BURNINGDOWN. Check them out at at their dot com.
My two brothers, both of whom went to Gompers, are doing well:
JOEL, my older brother ('84), and his wife and two daughters live in San Diego. He works in the transportation business and is doing well.
STEVEN, my little brother ('87), and his wife and two sons, live in San Diego. He is a Pilot for United Airlines.
