Erin's Story

Life I'm currently living in Artesia with my almost 18 year-old son. He's a freshman at Biola University...whoa!! Didn't we just graduate?? :) I recently transfered to a new job - from working in the pharmacy (tech) to doing the billing for the same pharmacy. I am SO happy I finally made the decision to switch. I'm WAY less stressed now and my feet don't hurt from standing for 8 hours each day. Whew! I miss all the cool people of the class of '89 (and, let's face it, we were ALL cool in our own way!). I'd love to hear from anyone and everyone! School Biggest crush? Gosh...I don't think I'm willing to reveal that here...even now! Most inspiring teacher...hmm...I would have to say Miss Husband. I felt like I struggled so much in her classes (had her for 2 years of English)...and probably it was just me fighting against not wanting to work hard...but I really believe she had a huge impact on my success in college and in the workplace. Knowing how to write well is SO important in everyday life. Thank you Miss Husband! I miss Mr. Robinson, too...he was a hoot! We rarely agreed (I was such an right-wing conservative back then...hey, wait...I still am!) but he challenged me to define what I truly believed in. Hey Mr. R...if you ever read this...you said you would retire when another Hartmann made it to the school. Well, he never went to Artesia (spent a year at Gahr, though) but he's now graduated HS and on to college. Gonna invite me to the retirement party?? Sometimes I think I would love to be back in high school again...back to simpler times (no bills, less housework, etc.). But, in reality, HS can be a brutal place. I think I'll stay the age I am. Memories...hmmm...I remember being nervous the first day of school. I remember being in Freshman English and watching "Romeo and Juliet". The teacher had left the room for some reason and some kids were making noise. I said, "Shhh", and one of the girls (I'm pretty sure I remember her name, but I won't say it here) took it personal (dang...can't a kid just want to watch a movie in peace??). She walked over to me and hit me across the head and told me to meet her after school. Yeah...I was such a fighter. Like I was really going to show up for that. Another memory...being in the office writing a report (I had asthma and couldn't participate in PE that morning) when the Space Shuttle exploded. I remember hearing people talking really loudly out in the office (I was in a conference room) and not knowing what was going on. I remember going into each class that day and the news coverage being on the TV. Everyone walked around in a daze. Such a sad day. I remember getting my first hickey (is that how you spell it?)...from a boy who will remain nameless...in the darkroom at school. And my parents didn't kill me. Shocker. I remember going to a Dukakis rally at Cerritos College (I think) with my civics class and being the only one boo-ing. LOL And I still have pictures of the George Bush (senior) rally at Heritage Park...awesome!! I remember SOS class. I had twin egg babies!! Such fun...but SO not anything like it was to TRULY raise a child. I think those programmable crying dolls they've got now are so much more realistic. I also remember sitting next to Tonie F...Expand for more
isher in that class and discussing our weekly protein intake. I think Tonie's the only one who'll get that. :) I remember performing "The Homecoming Queen's Got A Gun" (an 80's classic!) for the lip-sync contest my senior year. We didn't even come close to winning but it was fun anyway! I was so sad when I accidentally taped over the home-video of it a few years back. Dang! I remember JV Yell...learning the camp dance...trying out. I remember how I felt when my name was called at the assembly. I didn't believe it. I sat there. I had messed up a couple of times in the try-out! How could I have made it? I think I still have the paper megaphone that they hung around my neck that day. I remember Tara Velez making the squad, too...thinking how great it would be to have a friend going through this with me. Then she moved away soon after the start of our Junior year. Darn it! I remember thinking that being a cheerleader would give me at least a sliver of popularity. Uh...no. Being at the bottom of the pyramid, not having a roommate at cheer camp, "majority rules"...those are the things I most remember. It wasn't quite the experience I had thought it would be...but I AM glad I had the opportunity! Ah...High School! College My son was an infant when I started classes at Cerritos College. Nothing like being in the middle of class and your body telling you it's time to feed your kid. LOL I took only a couple of classes at a time at first. It was tough being a new mom and going to school, but with help from my family I made it through. I had initially intended to go into nursing, but then I discovered the Pharmacy Technician program and was really thrilled at the possibility of working in the medical field without having to change bed pans!! Medical Calculations (with Dr. Casas...great teacher!) was the first class I took in the program and I was hooked. 4 months out of school and I was approached with a job offer at Long Beach Memorial Med. Ctr. - no nights, no weekends...can't beat that in the pharmacy world! I never did have the whole "roommate, dorm-living, 4-year college" experience and I will always regret that. But I did what I could do at the time and I've made a decent living as a result. Along the way certain memories stand out... Taking "Intro to Human Sexuality" with my brother and my cousin. Now that was something. Taking "Astronomy" with my aunt...and the cool field trips (Joshua Tree is an awesome place to watch the stars...just don't take the LOOOONG way out of the park!). Taking "Interpersonal Communication" with my cousin...taught by Mr. Landros...cool guy. He taught us that "who you are determines what you perceive". Taking "Beginning Tennis" with my brother (yes, I did take classes by myself...but I guess they just weren't memorable!) and finding out on the first day of class that the teacher (coach) was one that we had both had in high school...Mr. Ellis (he was my 9th grade Science teacher and my bro's football coach). Great guy! I know a lot of people don't actually participate in the graduation ceremony at a Community College, but I needed to...needed to show the world (or at least the people that were in the stands!) that I had done it...had finished my AA degree and accomplished something!
