Erle's Story

UPdated - 5/9/15. The new pic is at a Poetry reading (my poem) at the college - courtesy of the Veterans Legacy. Program. I just finished my first year at Suffolk County Community College. I'm doing pretty well (considering who the rest of the students are - LOL). Guess I'll STILL be pretty busy for a while. I'm kinda like a big brother (to some) and a 'father figure" to others! They get a "kick" out of it (come to think of - SO DO I). Made a lot of new friends - most of them young enough to be my kids or grandkids - (talk about "culture shock"). I have to say - I've gotten more pats on the back and respect - than I ever did when I came back from Vietnam. While that's humbling - it's also sad (thinking back to 47 yrs ago). My heart still goes out to all my schoolmates that didn't make it back (alive) - you'll always be remembered (by me too). The biggest event that I've become aware of is the need to keep from answering too many questions in my classes, because I have to give the "newer" (and much younger) students a chance to participate. LOL R...Expand for more
etired a couple of years ago - I'm enjoying most of that. Military: I enlisted in the USMC in '67 and went over to Vietnam in Sept. Spent 1 yr there (didn't want to press my luck) and came home (well part of me did anyway). I was discharged as a Sgt (E-5) in 1970, with an Honorable Discharge. When I relocated to Long Island, NY - I joined the MOPH (Life Member) as Sgt at Arms, the VVA (Life Member) on the Board of Directors, and the Marine Corps League. BTW - I'm an active member of the CDC Club (Chemical Dependency Counseling), and the SVA (Student Veterans Association) - where they made me their President (3 weeks ago), and the College presented me with a Leadership Award! As the new President, I've had the group volunteer to help out at the VA Hospital (in Northport, NY). My life's experiences has given me something to pass on to the newer students, which they enjoy and look forward to, in each class. (I'm not the same 'me' that I was back in "the day"). {:>} I was invited to speak about my time in Vietnam by my alma mater on Nov 9, 2022.
