Ernest's Story

Life I turned 17 on July 27, 1952, and on July 28, I boarded a train in Seattle, WA, bound for Navy boot camp in San Diego. Upon completion I was transferred to Electronics Technician School at Treasure Island, CA. A few months before graduation I had applied for and taken an exam for a Secretary of the Navy appointment to the Naval Academy, but graduation came and went and I heard nothing. I was transferred to the Naval Communications Station at Guam, MI, and began an 18 month tour as a radio repairman. After two months a message was received that stated in part, "If he still so desires, transfer ETSN Luders to the US Naval Academy Prep School (NAPS), Bainbridge, MD, ASAP" Needless to say, they didn't have to ask me twice. Arriving two months after the beginning of classes at NAPS and not having been the greatest student in high school, the next few weeks were a disaster. I was failing all five subjects. Fortunately, with extra instruction, and a lot of midnight oil, I managed to get my head above water by the end of the program and most importantly, to pass the USNA entrance exams. Following graduation from USNA, I enjoyed 72 days leave back home in Seattle, WA, the highlight of which was my wedding to the light of my life, Paula Anderson. In late August we drove our Volkswagen bug to the opposite corner of the country, Pensacola, FL, where I began flight training. Our first son, Mark, was born at NAS Memphis, TN, during the eight week instrument training segment between Primary at Pensacola and Advanced at Corpus Christi, TX. Upon completion of flight training in February 1960, I was assigned to Patrol Squadron 17 based at NAS Whidbey Island, WA, flying the Lockheed P2V Neptune. We spent three and a half years at Whidbey where I made three deployments to the Alaskan/Aleutian area. Our number two and three sons Matt and John were born at NAS Whidbey. 3, I was transferred to the US Naval Postgraduate School at Monterey, CA, where I majored in Aerospace Engineering for two years and earned an MS degree. Selected to continue for a third year of postgraduate education, we moved a few miles up the road to Stanford University, but not before Paula gave birth to our fourth son, Joseph at Ford Ord, CA, in August of 1965. Upon completion in August, 1966, I was awarded the degree of Engineer. At about the same time I requested and was selected for transfer to the Restricted Line as an Aeronautical Engineering Duty Officer (AEDO). My first tour as an AEDO was at the Naval Air Test Center at Patuxent River, MD. This was probably the most challenging, rewarding and enjoyable experience of my naval career. Not only did I get the opportunity to attend the US Naval Test Pilot School but also got to fly many different model airplanes and work with some great pilots and engineers. From 1969 to 1972 I served as Avionics Officer on the staff of COMFAIRWINGSPAC at NAS Moffett Field, CA. In 1972 it was back across country to Maryland to serve on the faculty of the Naval Academy as an Aerospace Engineering instructor and later as Associate Chairman of the department. It was during this time that Paula reentered the work force as a Realtor. From 1975 to 1978 I served in the Washington, DC, area. Having reached the ripe old age of 43, and having served in the Navy a total of 26 years, I found myself in the wrong Washington and no longer working with airplanes. At that point it wasn't very difficult to make the decision to retire and pursue a second career in civilian industry. In July of 1978 I joined the Boeing Commercial Airplane Co. in my home town, Seattle, where I worked for 17 years until retiring in 1995. Paula continued her real estate career until the end of 1996 and now we're both retired and enjoying traveling and cruising.
