Everette (Ernie)'s Story
After school, went to auto trade school in KC MO for a year. In 1967 joined the Navy and spent the next 4 years on aircraft carriers being a boiler tender. Fireroom number 1 is where I started my hot job, aboard the USS BENNINGTON CVS 20, started out as an messinger and finishing up being a waterman controlling the amount of water going into the boiler. Spent 9 months on and off the coast of Vietnam.
Temps in the fire rooom at that time was running on the upper level around 175 degrees. Real nice and cool.
In 68 I was transfered to the USS HORNET CVS 12, ( now a museum in Oakland Ca.) and fireroom number 4 was my new home. She was in the ship yard for major overhaul, at Long Beach CA. This fireroom was a little different because we had number 2 an 3 screw shafts running through the fireroom. everything was in the middle between the two shafts. Made barber poles out of one and at 230 rpm, you didn't look at it long. During OH rumor had it we would be the recovery ship for Apollo 11. The rumor was right,
ABC,NBC, CBS, had there vans and tv equipment on the flight deck. NASA was there and Rockwell International. We sailed to Hawaii to pick up the MQF's and headed ou...Expand for more
t to the recovery area. Pres Nixon flew on board and watch the landing and recovery of the capsule.
The next recovery was Apollo 12, and the rest is history....During this time I got married....had two boys and 8 years later divorced.
My third carrier after decommissioning the Hornet, the USS Coral Sea CVA 43, San Francisco Ca, again in the yards for overhaul, discharged 1971.
In 1979 I went into the reserves and joined the US NAVY Seabees. Went in as a construction mechanic first class. Years later made, chief petty officer, ( CMC.) Construction Mechanic Chief.
1991 activated to Desert Shield Desert Storm, for 6 months. Retired from the Navy with 21 years 8 months and 3 days service.
Working for OCTD/OCTA as a mechanic, working on transit buses. Currently inspecting new cng ( compressed natural gas ) buses being built in Crookston Minn, and in Salina Kansas. Been doing this now for 34 years,(short timer)
I also teach maintenance classes on transit buses too.
Front ends, air conditioning, engines, and electrical systems, been doing this for ten years.
I hope to retire in about 2 years, God willing.....retired in march of 2018 after 40 years working on transit buses
