Ernie's Story

After graduating from Wingate and Coker College in 1979, I moved away from Chesterfield. For the next 8 years I would be dealing with athletics, like I never knew before. I was athletic director for The City of Bennettsville, and Camden/Kershaw County Recreation Dept. From here I made a bold move into Corrections in 1987. At first I was a Correctional Officer, and then I took a promotion to Recreation Specialist at Central Correctional Inst. in Columbia S.C. Once the institution closed in 1992, I moved to Walden Correctional Inst. in the Broad River Correctional Complex. Here again, I provided recreation activities to all inmates. In 1996 I made another bold move to Kirkland Correctional Inst. as a Correctional Officer again. From here, I made another move to The Women's Correctional Facility just up the street from where I was. This experience didn't pan out like I thought it should, so I made a move to leave state government and try County Government. I was a Detention Officer at Richland County Detention Center. I stayed here for almost two years until there was an opening at S.C. Dept. of Mental Health. Here, I was an Activity Therapist for Bryan Psychiatric Hospital. Unfortunately in June of 2001 the state went through hard times, and I was riffed out of my position. At this time I took a month off and decided to try going into the teaching profession. Luckily, I was at the right place at the right time. I was fortunate to enter into the Critical Need...Expand for more
s Program to become fully certified by the state. I was a Health/Physical Education Teacher for The Lee County Schools. I taught Health/Physical Education at a middle school (Mt. Pleasant Middle in Elliot) for two years. In July of 2003 I went back to working in a Detention Center in Sumter County to finish up my elgibility for retirement. This last position was for Sumter Lee Regional Detention Center. After working there for 6 months, I was elgible for retirement, and I took it gladly. From November of 2004 to September of 2008 I drove a semi-tractor pulling a 53 ft. trailer for several trucking companies. The experience of being all over the US was an experience, but I finally realized that I wanted to be near home. I guess you would say, I am a homebody person, who misses Chesterfield a lot. My mother passed in late 2007, and from that I kept saying to myself how great it would be to move back to Chesterfield. Beginning in March of 2009 my dream will finally come true. I will be moving back, and into the house I was raised in. Maybe I will come across some of my old friends, and we can talk about old times again. At this point in my life I feel that I would be happy and content living in Chesterfield, and possibly working at a part time job. This would complete my circle. Maybe you can share some interesting situations or events with me once I return. I hope old friends remember me as a likeable person, and one that they can feel comfortable around.
