Erskine Dottin:  

ERSKINE S. DOTTIN – Professor Emeritus, College of Education, Florida International University - was born in the salubrious climes of the West Indian island of Barbados, where he plied his wares as a TV announcer for the Caribbean Broadcasting Television station and for the local radio station, Rediffusion, where he was known to the island’s audience as “Easy boy Dottin.” He was also the national basketball coach of Barbados, and coached a team from Barbados in the South American and Caribbean Games in Jamaica and Puerto Rico getting his first international victory over a team from El Salvador. He came to the United States of America in 1970 and received his Associate of Arts degree in General Education from Pensacola Junior College and his Bachelor of Science degree (in Physical Education), and Master of Education degree (in Educational Leadership) from the University of West Florida, in 1973 and 1974 respectively. He received his Doctor of Philosophy in Educational Policy Analysis and Social foundations of Education from Miami University of Ohio in 1976. He taught physical education and coached the varsity basketball team at the Pensacola School of Liberal Arts from 193-174. He served on the faculty at the University of West Florida from 1977 to 1992, and a member of the faculty in the College of Education at Florida International University from 1992 until the present time. He served as a Fulbright Scholar at Rivers State University of Science and Technology in Port Harcourt, Nigeria from 1988 to 1989. He is a past president of both the Southeast Philosophy of Education Society, and the Council for Social Foundations of Education (formerly the Council of Learned Societies in Education) and served as the latter’s representative on the Unit Accreditation Board of the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (now the Council for Accreditation of Educator Preparation). He was instrumental in the NCATE Standards Committee’s work on the conceptual framework.
