Ethan's Story

Life I'm a sergeant in the Marine Corps. I work as a combat correspondent (journalist), and I am stationed in Okinawa, Japan. Uugh. Not fond of this little rock of an island. Can't wait to leave it. Been here 19 months. Have 17 to go. At least I have my beautiful wife and daughter with me. Been in the military about eight years now. It's a'ight. I'm good at it, so I'll hang out for a few more. Probably bounce around 11. We'll see. Haven't been to Iraq yet, but I'm trying to get orders. Not that I really want to go to that shithole, but I feel an obligation to do my turn in the desert. I got to attend the advanced Military Photojournalism course at S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University in New York. It's a pretty sweet gig. I'm an active duty Marine, but I got to go to one of the most prestigious communications schools in the country for a year. I didn't even wear a uniform; just went to college. And Uncle Sam floated me a paycheck every month and paid the outrageous tuition costs. Isn't it great to see your tax dollars at work? I've been married to my beautiful wife, Sabrina for eight and a half years. We have a 14-month-old daughter named Samantha and a beagle named Pokie. College I went to Syracuse University for a minute. Working on matriculating to get a BA from SU. Workplace I started working at 14 as a grocery bagger in Ione. I worked at KFC and Round Table Pizza in high school. Round Table is the only place I've ever been fired from, and my best friend Mike Smith is the one who fired me. (It was for missing an employee meeting!) I worked as a machine operator, making phone bills for about two years before I joined the militar...Expand for more
y. See MIL bio. In between the Army and the Corps, I worked as a manager of a Blockbuster Video. Please e-mail me with your cracks on my work bio. Military I joined the Army in January 1998. I went to basic training and infantry school at Fort Benning, Ga. From there, I got orders to 3rd Brigade of the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault). I was there for the remainder of my 3-year enlistment. However, I was able to take a quaint little 6-month 'vacation' to a splendid, lavish little province in southern Europe called Kosovo. By "splendid, lavish little province," I mean butt-hole of the earth. If you enjoy the smell of human urine tickling your nose on a constant basis and you're looking for ethnic and religious turmoil and hatred, visit Kosovo. When I got out of the Army, I joined the Marine Corps. I attended recruit training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego in the fall of 2001. I graduated boot camp with top honors in my company of about 360 recruits. From there, attended Marine Combat Training at Camp Pendleton, Calif. Headed to the Defense Information School at Fort Meade, Md. Attended the Basic Journalist Course and then the Basic Broadcaster Course. Graduated with top honors from the broadcaster course. Subsequently, received orders to the one place in the Corps I didn't want to go - MCRD San Diego. I spent about two years aboard the Depot before leaving for the advanced Military Photojournalism course at Syracuse University (see life/college bios). Now I'm in Okinawa. Sucks. Haven't been to Iraq yet. I've won several Marine Corps-level awards for writing and photojournalism over the past couple years, and I won one at the DOD level this year.
