Eugene's Story

Spent two interesting years at the U of M Minneapolis studying generals in preparation to entering the School of Management. Transferred to UW Stout so that I could study what I had a passion for.....hospitality. Four years later and long internship, I graduated with a BS degree in Hotel and Restaurant Management. I married my first wife between my junior and year, and my first son was born one week before I graduated in 1989. For the next two and a half years I worked for the US ARMY in Germany and Italy as a Club Manager (officer club, community club or NCO club for those of us that did not serve). Son # 2 was born in Germany on the day that our post sent out 840 soldiers to southeast Asia to participate in the first Gulf War. I truly enjoyed almost every moment working for the army. Although after 2 holiday season apart from our families, we felt like it was time to come home. Then two years in Lutsen at a resort running the food operation. Loved the area, hated the pay.... Son #3 was born in 1992. In 1994 purchased a home in Columbia Heights after being hired by the Crown Plaza Hotel in Minneapolis as a Director of Catering. This was the beginning of an exciting chapter in my hotel career. Over the next 8 years I was honored to work for some of the best hospitality organizations in the state. St Paul Hotel, Embassy Suites, Crown Plaza, Sheraton and finally the Riverwood Inn right over in Monticello. At a point somewhere in there, I realized that I had no other life other than work. So while I could tell you about the all of the cool dignitaries and celebrities that I have had the good pleasure of working with, it all seems shallow compared to what it cost me. own that I met her and attended college. After leaving the hotel industry, I worked for a few years as a mortgage broker (most recently for Wells Fargo). I enjoyed both the work and the pay, but did not have a passion for it. On July 7th, 2007 at 7:07pm, I married my soul mate and best friend, Laura. We were married in a simple outdoor ceremony at Riverwood. She is the mother of two wonderful daughters and they were her attendants as my three sons were mine. (I know, how very Brady like) We love our simple life in Coon Rapids, MN. That same fall I went back to college to study computer networking and network security. Most of my classmates were under 20 years old.......do I feel old! After two crammed semesters, I have attained another associates degree and will most likely add to that later. I currently do computer network and server support for a company that sells and maintains computer networks in the hospitality and retail network. We look forward to weekends now (in the past the weekends meant something totally different to me as a hospitality professional. We enjoy camping, fishing, home repair/remodeling and just spending time with each other. I still have a passion for fine food/wine/service and will most likely go on and on if I find any of the three, and heaven help me if I happen to find all of them in spot. However that has only happened a handful of times in my memory. My wife and I enjoy cooking for each other and love to share that passion with our guests. We dream of owning an Inn or B&B someday..... Today, 09/07/08, my older stepdaughter is getting married and will soon be making me a Grandfather (albeit by marriage, a grandfather all the same). Those of you that know of this feeling, know how sobering it is. Gene
