Eugene's Story
Life
I have over 12 years in the Marine Corps but am retired from the US Navy. I have worked at Autozone, Fedex, Computers & Networks and currently works for the Memphis Network Distribution Center, which I will be retiring from in 2015. I am married with two children. My wife is deceased. My son works for the City of Murfreesboro, TN as the Assistant Controller, He is now a CPA and he graduated from TSU and has his MBA from UTK.. My daughter graduated from UTK and now has her MBA and works for a place call Y12 as a Mechanical Engineer and is in a supervising position.
College
18 months of hard studying. Electronic Engineering is not easy subject even if you know something of the subject before hand. Going to school three nights a week and working full time make you wonder if it is worth it sometime.
Workplace
After retiring from the service in 1991, I started work at Autozone as a part time worker, working my way up to full time Parts Service Manager. At the same time I worked at Federal Express. In 1994 I started work at the Memphis Network Distribution Center as a Mailhandler. I got my AA while at the MNDC and went to work at Computers & Networks as a PC Technician. While at Computers & Networks, I learned how to work on printers and got my A+ certificate with several other printer and computer certificates. Due to the fact that PC techs aren't paid that much in my area I went back to work for the MNDC in 1999. I went back as a Mailhandler and in 2000 after passing the Maintenance test switch to Maintenance as a General Mechanic. I am now what is call...Expand for more
ed a Mail Processing Equipment Mechanic but I would love to get back into PC repair but only if the pay is worth it.
Military
I joined the military right after I turned 18. I went to join the Navy but the recruiter was never in and I got talked into the Marine Corps. I went to Viet Nam after boot camp. I was assigned to a unit called 3rd Marine Division SCAMP. While in Nam I met my wife through a High School classmate ( Portia Evers). After Viet Nam I was assigned to work at the Brig at NAS Cherry Point, NC and got married while there. After Cherry Point, I went to Drill Instructor School at MCRD Parris Island, SC and bombed out the day before graduation. After Parris Island I went to Gitmo, Cuba then to Camp Lejuene, NC. I then made the triangle again, Cherry Point, Cuba, Camp Lejuene. From Lejuene the second time I went to Kaneohe, Hawaii and then to 29 Palms, CA. I got out of the Marine Corps in 1981 and later joined the Navy. I went to boot camp for the second time in San Diego and then got orders to USS Blue Ridge in Japan. While on the Blue Ridge I was able to wear GOLD Rank Insignal and Hash Marks due to a recent change in policy and due to the fact that I already had over 12 years of Good Conduct from the Marine Corps. From Japan I got orders to USS Stump in Norfolk, VA but it was in the yards in New York. In 1986 I got orders to Recruiting Duty in Memphis. From Memphis I got orders as the Command Career Counselor on the USS Luce (DDG-38) which was decommissioned in April 1991 and I retired in the same month. I have 22 1/2 years total in the military.
