Everett's Story
Life
As most of you should know, trying to write a summary of the last 63 years or so is not easy. I have to say though that despite all the trials and tragedies, I canÃÂt think of a thing I would change. LifeÃÂs unfailing obstacles and glorious moments have made me the person I am today. And I am happy with my life and proud of my accomplishments.
My personal life: My wife Tina (Cottle class of 1970) has been by my side for 42 years now. Marriages are seldom smooth, but ours has been steady, yet evolving through all that time. We spend more time together and love each other more deeply than ever before. Together we have raised three successful daughters who have blessed us with eleven wonderful grandchildren (six girls and five boys). We have a lovely home in the Northland where we live alone (at last) except for two cats and two dogs.
Hobbies: I still have a love of automobiles and have spent my share of time restoring too many British sports cars. I am between projects now, but if I could just find an Austin Healey 3000 in need of restoration. (Just kidding Tina!) I also am an artist and writer. My artwork tends to pen and ink drawings and oil painting. My work has appeared in the Westport, Brookside, and Plaza Art Fairs. I write fantasy and science fiction, and my short story ÃÂTime Out of MindÃÂ took sec...Expand for more
ond place out of 17,000 entries in the 2001 Writers of the Future international writing contest. IÃÂm currently working on a fantasy novel trilogy. I also enjoy gardening, working out, and golfing.
Career: I went on to college after Northeast and earned a bachelorÃÂs degree in Business Administration and a MasterÃÂs Degree in Public Administration and have started on my doctorate. I spent several years in the juvenile justice field, then moved on to running community mental health centers, and now work for Developmental Disability Services of Jackson County as the Executive Director. I get to manage $33 million in funding and services to persons with developmental disabilities like Down syndrome, autism, cerebral palsy, mental retardation and other related disabilities. It is a great job and really gives me a positive perspective on life and everything I have.
Personal philosophy: Life is what you make of it. I have never been one to sit and wait for things to happen to me; if I see something I want I go for it. Sometimes the right things happen. Sometimes they donÃÂt. But I have never regretted making the effort. For an old guy from old Northeast, I think IÃÂve come pretty far ÃÂ much farther than I or anyone else probably expected. But the main thing is I am happy, and thatÃÂs all I ever wish for anyone.
