Farrell's Story
Life
After graduating from White Hall, I went to UA Monticello until 1983 (majored in chemistry and biology). Then to U of A Medical School in Little Rock until 1987. Internal Medicine Residency in Columbia, MO, from 1987-1990 then I was on active duty Navy from 1990-1998 serving 2 years in Yokosuka, Japan, then 4 years in San Diego, CA, (3 of which was fellowship in cardiology) and 2 years in Jacksonville, FL, as the staff cardiologist at the Naval Hospital there and Assistant Professor of Medicine at the Univ. of Florida Hospital in Jacksonville. I have been in Knoxville, TN, since June 1998. I was in private practice Cardiology until Aug 2007. I retired from clinical practice in 2007 and embarked on a new career as an Electronic Medical Records Physician Consultant for GE Healthcare's Information Technology (HCIT) divison. I got my instrument pilot license in Nov 2001 and love to fly - whenever, wherever.

Workplace
Wow... what a difference 3 decades makes. During 11th and 12th grade, I stuffed tacos and burritos at the local "Taco Hell" on Olive street. 25 years later, I have spent 14 years implanting pacemakers, defibrillators, cardiac resynch devices, and doing nuclear cardiology. I have travelled from Berlin to New Orleans to San Franciso on speaking engagments to share my experience in remote rhythm device monitoring... Now I've retired from clinical medicine and doing consulting work for GE Healthcare IT solutions.
Military
I joined the Navy to get a scholarship for medical school. With the exception of getting my education, and the 2 years I spent in Japan, it was a nightmare. I enjoyed Japanese culture, but the military reality is that one has no control over their own life. I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy... or then again, I might. They use you and abuse you and then wonder why you don't re-sign at the end of your obligation.
