Felicia's Story

Life After spending nearly 15 years in Atlanta working in the telecommunications industry, I quit my job in 2002 to become a middle school math teacher. I moved to Boston in 2003 to attend graduate school and worked in Boston for a year. In the summer of 2005, I returned to Atlanta to continue my teaching career. In my spare time, I enjoy spending time with friends, working on church, community service and youth enrichment projects, and traveling. In the last couple of years I've been to Europe and to Japan; next on my list are Africa and South America. One day I'd like to return to the Bay Area (if only the cost of living wasn't so high...) but until then I try to visit twice a year. College After high school I left California and went to New England; in 1988 I graduated from Harvard College with an engineering degree. Once I decided to change careers to become a teacher, I enrolled at Georgia State University in Atlanta to take prerequisite courses for a graduate-level teacher preparation program. I attended GSU for two years (2001-2003), but did not receive a degree. I returned to Massachusetts to earn a master's degree in education from the Harvard Graduate School of Education in 2004. Perhaps there will be a doctoral degree in my future, but for now I'm just working to become an excellent teacher! he local phone company serving the Southeast US. I stayed at BellSouth for 14 years. I enjoyed all of the jobs I had at BellSouth, but my most favorite and most memorable was working for 4 years on projects related to the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta. I helped to design the telecommunications network, which transported results from the competition sites to the broadcasters, newspapers, and athletes' villages. It's amazing that it takes 4 years and thousands of staff and volunteers to put on an event that only lasted 17 days! I also developed expertise in marketing, sales, operations, training, and product development. I got to travel a bit to other cities in the South, and met some really wonderful people during my tenure at BellSouth. My first teaching job was in the Boston Public Schools. Boston is trying to close the "achievement gap", or the vast difference in test scores and dropout rates between low-income, mostly minority students and middle-class students. I tried to do my part, but a teacher's job is very challenging. I learned something new about myself and my students every day; there's definitely joy and pain in this work! Now I teach in the Atlanta Public Schools, and the challenges I experienced in Boston are very similar. Many students are unmotivated and underperforming, but we as teachers have to bring out the very best in them. And I am determined to help them succeed!!
